Nice thread , and yes a car well worth saving .
As for your steering and the original builder using mainly VW parts have a look at a Mark 1 VW Rabbit rack and pinion ( would have been available in 74 ), as a few people have used them here in Australia lately as they are an easy fit and also can be fitted with a ball joint tie rod end

Here are some photo's of Jim Chamberlains Pikes Peak car he raced in the early 70's. He set a record for open wheel cars of the day. The motor has one off heads built just for this car. Two valves per cylinder I think.
He still owns it.

I like those rear tires, I could use a set. That's one slick machine

Well its been a LONG time since I updated this tread. I have recently received a picture from the official Pikes Peak Hill Climb archives of this car from 1975. A new batch of pictures from a photographer from back in the day have been donated. Hope to find additional pics soon,. Wish me luck

So far all I can really say is I saved the car from getting cut up for scrap. I definitely haven't made enough progress in the last eight years. I did locate a vintage trailer, one that will need some modification to fit the car properly. Many parts have been rounded up for it so far, low back race seat, 1600dp engine, and transmission. plus a set of wheels for the front to match the backs with 4 lug VW bolt patterns. This is a third slot in the line project car for me. It really needs someone who will bump up its progress. A Pikes Peak fan, or Type 3 fan. Its a RARE car and needs to be finished up and put back into the public. Message me if interested , I just plan on storing it while other projects get completed.
