That dash looks great. Is that one of the repop pads? Happy with it?

well, got some miles on her

she scoots Shocked like, unreal....it's a gti shaped like a billboard!

but, it has not been a fun 120 miles. I will admit, I am having cooling issues. I have tried a ton of different things, but the long story short is she gets hot. I want to stay at 190-200 if possible with a 'max' of 215 or so. the problem is, the engine bay is pressurizing at speed, I am convinced this is the problem.

I have tried a ton of different things, including making my own 'sled tins' to try and drop the engine bay pressure.

so far I have:

made sled tins

put a smaller radiator (heater core sized) under the bus like an oil cooler in the air flow. it's so small, I think its like pissing up a rope

removed the new thermostat, took my old one and pinned it open

the list goes on....

so tomorrow, I will try:

propping the lid open a hair (I took the seal out of the bus hoping that it would be enough)

prop the deck lid from the top instead of the bottom

putting the splash pans in

taking a donor apron and try blowing some holes in it

taking a donor decklid and making a hole under the plate

make a 'splash pan' for the middle of the bumper...

I am really at a loss, and quite honestly am about ready to scream. I was thinking of cutting the 'cheeks' off in the engine bay (where the seal sits) but I don't think that will help any.

I have had streamers taped all over the place trying to understand whats going on with fans blowing all over...

I need to generate a good vacuum in the engine bay. I know for a fact it's pressurizing because at speed, my hatch for my coolant fill is like a flue on a boiler, it opens up higher and higher the faster and faster I go...

I have been up for almost 24 hours now. I have to get this figured out....

as far as questions I missed....

no new dash pad, super clean OE

I did the seats (think someone asked that)

if I missed a question, just re ask....I an sooo fucking burnt out at this point

isnt the engine bay fairly open around the engine? got an extra fan to blow air stright down over the engine to promote airflow out the bottome?

OR

air dam in front of the oil pan to put a vacuum under the engine block to promote airflow in the downward direction?

Seems to the the problem is that the opening from the bottom is much larger than the side intakes. Somehow, the air has to be stopped from entering the bottom of the engine bay and pressurizing it. Maybe some kind of pan from the chassis going under the engine, though I imagine it would be rather large as it would need to go from right to left chassis rail and all the way to the valence. Maybe just a duct from the radiator down under the rear valence? The original design had the engine bay sealed, front and sides. Without all that, lots of air gets directed upwards. Why do you think they had sled tins? That is a big opening if you take a look from the bottom.

thanks for the ideas guys

I feel that I am close. keep the ideas coming. If worse comes to worse, I go belly mount. I just feel that this should work. we will see if any of my other ideas pan out.

I really am feeling defeated right now Crying or Very sad

Keep at it skills. My belly mount isn't as efficient as I'd like. On hot days I'm on the fans more than I'd like at highway speeds. I'm thinking the fact the bus is lowered might be impacting the airflow.

If the pressure coming into the engine bay from the bottom is so strong it is battling the fans, maybe reverse the fan flow so it works with the bottom pressure and push the air up and out the vents. I know this sounds bassakwards but it may be worth a shot.

I like your dash mod, I only wish you painted the faces black like the dash. They look very out of place silver.

Hopefully you figure out the overheating issue. I am thinking that because this is a '70, the smaller air vents aren't helping you at all like the later model buses.

Good going.

Put some tape around the perimeter of the engine cover. With the seal removed it could chip paint.

Try blocking these open sections off on the shrouds.

Are those Pulling fans or Pushers?

Prop the engine cover open or remove it and see if it makes a difference. Be careful, you don't want that slamming shut at speed.

Make a cardboard shroud for the front of the radiators and duct them to the Air intake louvers.

If it's getting to you. Drop it now and go onto something else before you $uck something up.

Good Luck

Most likely the increased air flow across the bottom of the engine is causing an air bubble in the engine bay. Effectively shutting off the incoming air.

From Truck Tech Digest.
According to such experts, the tailgate left in the up, or closed position actually creates a large bubble of air in the bed that aero engineers call a “separated bubble” or “Locked Vortex Flow.”

keith~ I have the silver rings to go around the rest of the dash, just not high on the list right now

tcash~ I have the OE vw flaps installed right now. I have done everything you have suggested up to this point, including putting a bottom decklid stand off in place

babysnakes~ interesting concept. right now they are puller fans

so I made my bumper filler panel, tried to do the decklid prop, to no avail...

however.........

my observations have been the left hand radiator seems to be the 'primary' as this one seems to have the fan run most often.

so, this last go around I jumped the right hand fan to run at low speed. I was at 185 around town and was feeling pretty good about it, so I jumped on 95, and went for a few exits. at normal 65-70 it held good at 200/205 but at 75-85 it was starting to creep up to 218. with a exit coming up, I got off the freeway

I have been watching ECT's on my scanner, as the gauge reads about 8* hotter.

sloride~ any photo's of your bellymount? I feel I am getting closer, I hope...

Can you run that secondary fan at high speed?

Would it be as simple as reversing polarity ( reverse the two wires) on the fans to make them pushers? Quick and easy test.

That likely wouldn't work, the blades would be tilted in the wrong direction.

So, if I read this correctly you have both fans wired to come on at different times? Why not wire them to come on together at the same time then?

I would think that with the way you have the fans setup, it would be like you're only running a single radiator rather than two radiators.

I will be wiring my radiators together when I do mine.

Have you put a video cam in the engine compartment with the fans shut off to see which way they windmill at different speeds?

Sorry came in late but read the whole thing- epic tale of 2 buses- one junker headed for doom and then it's new self headed for greatness. Thanks for the ride.
