I recently worked on a Thing rattle that had loose Stub Axles. It made that same noise.... until I tighten them and put in new cotters. |

Update. Took the car to my mechanic and he was not sure what it was. Had another one drive it and he was not sure. We decided to pull the motor. He found a loose transmission shaft which is not good. Trans was removed and is going to be rebuilt. Hope that's the noise. Going to go over the motor for any loose sheet metal. Thanks again for helping to try to figure it out. |

VW theory #181 As long as the motor is out a complete new clutch will bolt right up to your VW for the price of parts only... .... Along with a few other issues.
Who is building your trans? There is a new guy in the Springs who seems to know his way around the VW trans. He had a booth at Bandimere this year. I will try and remember his name. Seemed like a good vw guy... |

The tranny input shaft is supposed to have some up and down/side to side movement. |

It was an in and out movement that seemed to be the issue. |

Hey Elwood,
glad you finally found the "mystery noise" source, sorry it's a trans rebuild involved.
Other than a rebuild, what about a transmission upgrade?
I've been mulling a freeway flyer type built trans for my THING,
it's not going off road any time soon and a bit more top end speed
would be nice in a few situations.
just a suggestion and if you havent started the rebuild now would be a good time eh?
Hope the trans fixes it! Good luck with whatever you choose.

It's out and in the shop. That is an interesting thought though. I do hope that is where the noise is coming from. I have the car at home and I am going to work it over before I get the drivetrain back in it. We looked the motor over and cant find anything loose. Hope for the best. |
