Has reserve price on auction and a estimated $19,300 value listed- that hardtop syncro isn't going to be had for cheap. Hardly a good deal as listed.
I hope that it finds a good home. |
Pertaining to donated vehicle auction estimated value is only a tax deductable value reported by the charity which is contracting Copart to auction off the vehicle. Charities always use maximum allowable amount for tax deduction purposes of the donator. If estimated value is on an insurance total loss vehicle (collision, flood, theft recovery etc) than that value is established by the insurance company as a pre-loss value of the vehicle. Estimated value is NEVER what the bidder will pay. Copart didn’t have minimums when I was actively buying and bids are taken in various increments ($70 in this case) so theoretically one bid could get the vehicle if no one else bids on that lot. But the end price on this Syncro one will probably be more then that.
I have bought wrecks for parting out for as little as $25. Only late model cars end up in bidding wars _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

Although I have not used Copart personally, a good friend of mine has bought 4 vehicles through their auctions recently. He has had to use an authorized bidding representative. IIRC, Copart and Proxy bidder (your copart "bidder/facilitator") fees can easily top $900, even for low bid vehicles. That does not include the cost of shipping, which goes up significantly when the vehicle does not "run and drive" for whatever reason. |

Looks like it's on minimum bid at $800 at the moment. I really hope a Samba member gets it!
To the previous poster from NY: sure, if you are not a licensed wrecker in some states you have to use an agent who will charge you appropriately. In many states like WA a private party can get membership at Copart and buy directly. Unless the vehicle must be destroyed for safety reasons in which case no one but a recycler can buy it. The rules are plentiful but all actually make sense. I ma not an expert on wrecking yard auctions but I have dealt with them before with success.
Also "run and drive" doesn't mean anything should be driven off the lot. Anything wrecked and you'll have to tow it on a trailer. _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

AFAIK "runs and drives" just means the shipper or auction house won't need to load it on a transporter with a forklift for shipping. I've seen some nice COpart cars with crushed rockers.
If I understand you correctly, residents of some states don't need to use brokers? Or, do you have to be there in person to bid?
Either way, this was syncro was eye candy. Hope a Samaba member gets it x2 |

I don't think you have to be there but if a proxy (public party or broker) ends up in a tie with a live bidder they award the auction to live bidder. Or it used to be that way I am not sure if ti is the same now. They change the rules all the time and states legislate new laws continuously to prevent the public from recycling dangerous vehicles back onto roads.
I'll be able to share more details in the near future as I am going to get a buyer's license from IAA soon hopefully. _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

I went to look at this van and drove it. The van drove good, ran really good and shifted good. However the van has a smell like it had leaked, the paint looks maico to me paint on the window trim. The owner couldn't provide me with engine rebuild paperwork. He told me 5k on rebuild and now ad says 12k on rebuild and their video says 18k on rebuild. It did drive well though.
Just a heads up

That syncro looks fishy. The ad says 87 but the bumpers and mirrors say 90.
The other has no phone number. |

1986 Volkswagen Vanagon with engine conversion - $1800 (Prospect)
1986 Volkswagen Vanagon odometer: 122 fuel : gas transmission : automatic title status : clean
86 7 passenger van with tiico conversion (2.0l inline motor) and auto trans
121k miles
Here's the story... the previous owner bought this van in '91 and had the tiico conversion done in '01. I have a folder full of receipts, records, original manual and window sticker, etc. Very well cared for. After the conversion, he had issues passing emissions inspection in northern VA and parked the van. The last registration was '06.
The van has no rust at all.
I bought it and drug it home. My plan was to get it on the road as a primary family vehicle. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I'm putting it up for sale.
I had the starter rebuilt. I replaced the plugs and wires. I have a hard start kit on the way. I believe the fuel injectors need to be rebuilt or replaced. It will fire on starter fluid. It will need tires.
Come and get it. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia - $3500 (Portland, ME)
Selling my 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia
-144,000 mi with less on newly converted engine
-Manual 4 spd Transmission
-Converted Kennedy Kit Subaru 2.2 Engine
-Pristine interior w/ all original pop-up camper
-Runs and drives great, more torque than VW with the subaru engine.
-All service records on original VW servicing book. (Stamped for each increment of servicing)
-Some rust on body, but underneath has hardly any.
-Currently registered in Maine
This van has lots of life left, but I have little use for it and I need the money for some other business ventures. Sad to see her go. You'll see once you drive her that she's solid, lots of power.
$3,500 OBO, I need to sell the van by September 5th before my trip to Europe, so I'm willing to negotiate.
Will consider trade for small Toyota pick-up, corolla, camry, subaru outback or legacy.
Photos will come later today.
Thanks
Navi

Second chance to live as donor for other vans. Jason is a nice guy, glad this van will be helping other Vanagon owners. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD
