Check the "Technical" dropdown at the top right just under the ads. You'll find a lot of information on at your fingertips.

It's been recommended to have the schematic blown up and laminated as you'll probably reference it more than once while owning the car. Good luck and ask questions as there are a lot of folks who are willing to help and have a lot of experience. I can't help you at the moment as I'm not at the wiring stage of my build but hope the info helps. _________________ MonT3

That's the best I can do working off the diagram. I think you repeated a few wires though, so I added my comments next to them. If those don't work, then you need to buy a VOM, or take it to someone who does auto electrics. Note; you'll have to provide them with a wiring diagram, so they can use their VOM to determine which wire does what though. I think most places charge 65 an hour to do that kind of work.
Keep in mind that IF the PO changed the ignition switch, some of the colors won't match, and you'll need to use a VOM to verify what they actually do.
A little research, and some time with a cheap VOM (from HF) will go a long way to fixing your problem. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Here's some pics of my 71 wiring:
ignition switch, harness side
ignition switch plug (the "gray" might be "white")
plugged into the column
And the turn signal wiring loom
Maybe these will help. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Great pics Donnie. It's been a while since I saw a normal 71 under dash wiring, that I hadn't realized that there were 2 red/black stripped wires. One of those goes to the starter, and the other goes to the headlight switch. Vw did that change for 71 and later cars, to turn off the headlights whenever the ignition was shut off (so you didn't drain the battery).
The white wire, is probably a gray wire. I believe 2 were used, 1 for the key buzzer, and one to the fuse panel (to power the key buzzer).
The brown with a white stripe, goes to the "S" terminal on the headlight relay (it's basically a floating ground that allows the relay to switch between hi and low beams). That's why I called it a ground above.
I hope this clarifies a few things. I still think you need to get a cheap VOM (from HF), as it'll help you with what you're doing now, and later down the road for other electrical work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Me too Bob -- I can't imagine anybody trying to do wiring work without one, as these days they're so inexpensive and easily available. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |
