I have a front in with the crank hole and pivoting cover. What is a fair price for such a thing? Some see it as rare, but I have noticed a couple on Thesamba here for crazy money that have been on the site for years!
Thanks,
Trev

That's a good question, I picked up one of those a long time ago, I forget why, even got the nut that goes on the pulley. Not sure what year it fits or model. I believe they were made to go on busses also. Anyone know the difference?

The 36 hp ones are far more common than the 25 hp ones, and worth less IMO. Me, I'd say 36hp $50-$90, 25hp ones, $75-$150.

Much harder to find are the beetle hand cranks, which are about twice as long as the bus ones, that seem to be everywhere...

Assuming they are in nice condition, I think the max on the 36hp style is about $75. I see there are a few on here for $80 right now, unsold.

The 25hp ones - more. I think I sold my last one for $125 and it was pretty clean. A lot of them have the little "finger" hacked off, which affects the value.

If you need a 25hp crank start tin, find a crappy 36hp one, remove the window flap, then spot-weld it to the 25hp tin and drill the hole.

Good idea but then that would be a grafted-in non-factory 25hp crank start tin..... Wink

Well, yes... I did this recently to retrofit a 1600 tin with crank start - it looks factory. If one did this to a 25hp tin, I wonder if anyone could tell it wasn't original.

but been in australia, we had hardly any 25hp engines (matador is main 25hp source, and even limited) since 53-4 was the 1st year of import.
would early aussie 36hps have the finger tin? does anyone have info about this?

Early 36hp rear tin has both the "finger" and the hole for the breather tube. This applies to both Type 1 and Type 2 (crank start) types.

This type was used at least through calendar year 1954 and possibly as late as the end of the 1955 model year.

I'm pretty sure my old 1/55 Bus had the finger but I cannot remember for sure.
I remember removing that piece of tin and it was a pain to get it back on because of the finger.

The Bus had the original engine and everything else was pretty original.

The extractors on the engine at the moment are making it super difficult to see how it fits, but once I get the og round style exhaust on it I'm sure it will be fine, I'll put it on with the fan belt off!

The pressing on where it drops down some of them are slightly diagonal and other ones are steeper almost straight up-and-down
