Looks like you got your work cut out for ya. What are your plans for your rebuild? Are you looking to pull the shell off?

Agreed. I'd pull the body off and do some media blasting for sure. Mike might think it'll be easier to leave it on the pan, but I think you'll be further ahead pulling the body off and digging in deep. These cars have a lot of hidden areas that can try to come back and haunt you, IF you don't dig deep. Plus it allows you to get more access to some areas that are hard to get at with the pan on. Monte and Clatter have already found this out for themselves, and I've done a few of these cars (I live in the "salt belt" of the USA) to know rust can hide in various places, and how much easier it is to have the body off the pan when doing rust repair. Good job cutting out the bad stuff.

That vent piece looks awesome. If you can blast some of that rust away, go for it. What you have going for you is the top of your rockers looks to be saved. I just posted some pics on my thread cleaned up pitted areas. You have some of those but not sure how deep they may be. How are you going to patch up the heater tube that runs the length of the rocker? Keep at it as it'll come back together.

i managed to cut out the rotten heat tube and replace it back to good metal

Repaired the bracket that holds the tube at the front and then fabbed up a repair to the heat tube outer cover.
Not concourse standard but structurally sound.
Next is getting the outer rocker to line up and complete the front corner repair

Did a really good job patching up those pieces. Keep it up and those will be closed up in no time! Make sure you test fit those outer rockers so you have the bottom lip extended to cover any gaps (should they be there). Very Happy

Thanks for the positive comments guys, keeps you motivated.
I am going to try to replicate the bottom edge on the rocker, ie folded over 90 degrees on the lower edge as per the other, good, side.
Wish me luck.

Lovely work.
Kudos to you for keeping on.
Watching in awe, as those channel areas are complicated beyond simple repair!

Love it! Applause Saved yourself a ton of time test fitting the doors!!! Great job lining those rockers up and getting them in place. How did you roll the bottom-end piece? Also, did you fit the fenders over the ends to mark the mount points for the fender edges - please say yes? I welded in M8 bolts to the outer rocker skin so the front fender and rear fenders can bolt to the rocker parts that'll be covered by the fenders. Yes? Regardless, looks awesome!

Thanks for the comments guys, makes it all worthwhile especially as i dont do this for a living, fortunately. Monte we have a folder in the workshop at work which i can use but the rocker would not go in to fold the lower edge, so i clamped it to a nice edge on my bench and hammered it over a bit at a time. I trialled the wings on a hundred times also to check location and welded M6 captive nuts into the rocker panel before installation as per the original.
Back to it tonight for more fun, grinding
It shows that with a bit of patience even those aftermarket rocker panels can be made to fit quite well.

Just noticed the ad in Type 3 parts on here for those black rockers, ISP are selling for 200 bucks each.
They look different than the one i bought, didnt realise there was more than one supplier. The front and rear ends are quite different.
Mine was not perfect but looks better quality than the ISP ones. Mine came from CSP in Germany and was 90 Euros, about 120 bucks, if i remember. Obviously it would cost a bit in shipping to the US but is an alternate if anyone needs any.

Didn't get much done last night, just grinding down the welds and fabbed up a repair for the lower inner wing corner. Still, abit of progress i guess.
Rocker just needs a skim of filler and its done. Have to finish the vent area next.
On vacation for 10 days now so no further postings for a bit.

Really nice work on that, you're cracking on at a good pace with it Cool
That's how I did my drivers side cutting along the sill edge. Did you change the heater channel bottom too, I think I used a T3D closing panel for mine?
