I'm not sure if I'd want to pay anything over $1000 for it. Looks like it'd be a pretty big project, especially considering my lack of experience. |
Well, since it's been sitting in a field for who knows how long, I would just assume the underneath is rusted, the engine is probably toast, ditto on brakes and tires. Then you've got the electrics to deal with and whatever else comes up, and it will come up.
Not saying not to buy it, just saying that maybe 1000 is too much. I would treat it as a parts vehicle and maybe go to 500. But we are in different parts of the country so your mileage may vary.....
Good luck, hope you make a deal! _________________ '03 MV |

What would help people put a price together is pictures of the interior and camper. If the cabinets and interior are in great shape, they can fetch a good chunk of change.
I'd certainly knock on his door and see if he's interested in selling it. If he is, you could then snap a lot more pictures of it, then post them here. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I agree with Bill on this. It's fun speculating though, isn't it? _________________ '03 MV |

I left a note in his mailbox about a week ago, so I'll give him a little time before knocking. I'll definitely be sure to post pictures up when/if the opportunity comes. |

I paid 300 bucks for a bus in better shape than that two years ago. Go in at that and max maybe 500. Its worth about 300 in scrap metal. |
I don't know about that approach. He has another really nice bus and I'm sure he is aware of how stupid much even a project bus is going for here. If it's complete and not rotted underneath, and it appears to at least come with a drivetrain, I'd pray for $500 but go up to $1000. I've flipped a few in similar condition, and once they can move under their own power it's a 2.5-3.5k bus as it sits. But if the motor is shit(probably is) and the front end needs serious work and you want to keep it as opposed to flipping it, be prepared to get far more money into it. The real money is going to go into tires, and bringing the brake system and front end up to par. _________________ KK4NTP

New here, and to VW's of all kinds. I thought it was good deal but some may say otherwise. Paid a cool $600. Colorado bus so rust is VERY minimal. A bit of surface rust on the outside but nothing is even close to rotted through. Pulled up all carpet and no rot at all on the floor either. PO said it ran 2 years ago when he parked it. I have had it two weeks and haven't had it running yet. Its a 1979 Transporter (i think?) and has a sunroof. Looking forward to the information available here! oh and the enjoyment of owning a bay.

Just picked this 75 westy last night. Its actually really solid in the floors. Rockers and quarters are junk, but not a big deal. It is an auto looks like the flex plate bolts broke, hope to pull the engine out of it this weekend (as long as I get time to rebuild the carbs in my 72) and see if I can get it in working order.

Got a lead on a 73 bus this Am. Supposed to be straight and rust free, and pretty complete. Abandoned on some property about 8 years ago. Turns out to be an 83 Vanagon. Other than that, the description was just about right. _________________ nothing |
