My bug is missing the holes for my oh shit bar above the glove box. Does this mean someone covered it? Don't all bugs have? And do people drill holes to install?

Remove glove box and look for the two holes. Just poke them thru and mount the grab handle.

Yep, they are on the roof turret of 73 and later bugs, standard, super and convertible
Probably a new 1973 regulation somewhere they were in the head contact zone during an accident and needed moving.

My 73 has one. It does not have the one above the door, wish it did.

Look and see if the holes are there in the steel body. It appears you have a standard and I bet the two holes are there.

if you go through the 3 bazillion dash pad removal threads on here you'll notice all the 73 and later standards dont have the grab handle holes in the dash.
not a huge job to drill them in though

Thats a 68 not a 74.

ok i googled 1974 bug for pics of dash and body. interesting thanks for letting me know its not a 74. this is my first bug since 1988. in 1988 i owned a 65 bug.

the bug is titled as a 74.

Chances are it started life as a 74 bug and someone has just put a 68 body on most likely due to accident damage or rust as its easier to just drop on another body than repair a badly damaged/rusted one.

The chassis number on the backseat will tell you if it hasnt been messed with.

Beetles identities go with the pan not the body so its still classed as a 74 even with a 68 body.
