Remember Ford's ignition module that was mounted on the motor, the engineers wanted to move it to the cooler firewall. But it was too expensive to relocate. People died in that one also.

At least Gm got the small block right the first time

With respect to ford not changing design because of cost. One word...

they run them because there cheap to buy and build, it has nothing to do with reliability. a chevy motor in a ford or mopar is a shameful thing to do.

Back to the clutch cable issue.....I was headed to work one day, waiting in line at the Navy base, when I felt a "pop" in my clutch pedal. Found I had to shut the car off to get it into first gear, but otherwise it seemed to work fine. Managed to get it home, checked the cable and there were THREE strands left at the transmission end.

I keep a spare throttle cable, clutch cable, and wingnut in the car at all times.

Been sick as hell the last couple of days and haven't dove into the problem. Good thing it isn't my DD. I would hate to change a clutch cable on the side of the road.

So, I quit VW's back about 1979, after having a 66 bug, a 65 bug, a 68 baja, a 65 bus, a 70 squareback, and part ownership in a buggy with a 36 horse motor. I honestly never thought they were high quality cars, just cheap and fun to drive and work on. Had a 68 MGB, loved it, even working on the dual points and dual SU carbs every weekend to try and make it run. Had my mini trucks, 2 Ford Couriers, and a Chevy Luv, Isuzu Pup, Mitsubishi, never could really say I loved them, though I tried. 69, 70, 71 Ford F100's, automatics and 3 speeds on the tree, all did their job, but none exciting. Had my Toyota Corollas, Mazda 626, apparently reliable as long as I spent tons of money on maintenance. Loved my 61 Buick Skylark, but who didnt love their first car, and my 66 Mustang Fastback, with factory disk breaks, makes me yearn for one again, but I had not a second thought when I sold it to buy the MGB. I have since owned a 71 Pinto, Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee's, yes plural, Blazer s10's, Ford bronco II, full size Tahoe, a Jeep Patriot. I can honestly say that all were special in one way or another, and all did their job, and if decently maintained, reliably. Currently daily driver is a 2004 Dodge Dakota, bought new, now with 254,000 miles, all on original motor and trans. And guess what, I now own a 71 bug, and a buggy with a 1915. Wow, I hope I am not starting over again.

I had a ford with a bowtie once, Registered 1923 Ford model T with a 5 digit V.I.N., they were lost a DMV when I went to get it licensed. The supervisor came out, looked at it and the V.I.N. and said that's how it was done back then, your supposed to KNOW THIS! Now get him his plates and let him get out of here.

I thought is was sad then too.

Got around to the vert today......hook broke on the pedal assembly. Guess I didn't check it after all. Had another pedal assembly that I put in to get it back on the road for now. The hook didn't look all that good on that one either, but it will work for now.

10 years ago clutch cable broke for Mrs. Cusser in parking lot 2miles from my house, fixed it there, saw worn hook. So a week later I bought installed a new pedal hook.

So I think it would've been best to fix right while pedals were out, to save labor.

The pedal assembly that I took out is in better condition overall than the one that's in there for now. I will rebuild and recondition it after I get my little shop done. Its not a big deal to change the assemblies and I will replace the cables at that time also. Being retired I have time on my side and I need the vert to be a driver for now. The Ghia will be coming down after my shop is completed......that should be in the next week or so.
