|
|
I just got 4 smoothies sandblasted.
I stopped by the tire store to ask if the pits on the rims would make them leak.........
The tire guy thought the tubeless tires would leak......
Any suggestions on how to fix this ?
Can I use a flap wheel to smooth out the edges ?
Can I put body filler in the pits....or...jb weld ?....or....??? _________________ 63 two fold rag

So far in my time of mounting/dismounting and repairing VW and trailer tires by hand. I have yet to have a problem with a leaking bead from rust or minor damage. There's a lot of tire that goes along the wheel lip to seal it. As long as it's clean and free of debris you should be fine. If the wheels lip looks like it came out of the ocean then you might have a problem. I've had some fairly nasty looking wheels both steel and aluminum still seal up tight as a drum with no leaks. But a quick cleaning couldn't hurt. Flap or wire wheel should do te trick. _________________ I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Pete, I use tubes in my 66 wheels, they dont have the safety lip on the bead so for me tubes are better _________________ CGLI qualified body repair and refinish tech

Common issues..
A nice good smooth bead of RTV in the bead area during mounting will seal the deal..
Case in point.. I just moved 4 tires from aluminum wheels back to pretty good stock steel wheels that I recently cleaned and painted.. The bead areas were actually pretty good.. some pits but nothing serious.. so I thought..
The next morning.. all 4 were flat... (with no prior issues)
I tried some super bead sealer..made specifically for bead leak repairs... NADDA!!
Flat in 2 days....
I simply applied nice coat of quality RTV sealer to the bead area on the wheel...
Mounted the tires with the sealer still semi wet....
Have yet to loose any pressure since..

After 6+ years working specifically on tires that is the way to do it. Be kinda quick with the bead sealer, slop a bunch on and seat the bead. The excess bead sealer will rub off easily.
Personally I wouldn't spend much time/money messing with it. Take it to Discount Tire. They will do the tires and rims "carry out" without being on your car. They will mount and balance for around $7.00 a tire and do flat repairs for free. If you have problems with your bead after taking it there, take it back. Spend your time finishing stuff that people won't do for free. |

..Well over 30 years for me....... On ALL Auto mechanical repairs...
Here lately.. "some" tire shops are refusing to mount tires on used wheels.. or used tires period...
Sad sad ... You can thank the litigating USA for that one.....

That's a steal for tires. Around here, if you're looking for a set of 4, brand new, then count on spending out at lest $300, depending upon what size of tire (the $300 is the cheapest size) _________________ --

Dyna beads are the brand name for balancing beads. But on a budget you can also use regular BB's or heavy duty plastic airsoft BBs. I've never used the dyna beads myself. They are much smaller and should in theory work better than the larger BBs. Plus they fit through the valve stem if the tire is mounted. With BB's you have to break the bead to install them. I like BBs myself. Much easier to try to reuse them. I usually suck them up in a shop vac, clean them out in an old tea strainer and reinstall them in the next tire. The Dyna beads I hear can be a bit unpredictable when you try to corral them. _________________ I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I had dyna beads put in my wide whites in March when they were mounted locally. (Millar Highway Tire, Canby, OR) they put them in at the same cost as they would have charged for lead weights. They ride like a dream.
They typically use the beads on big rig and tractor trailer wheels, and they were happy to try them on my beetle.
It's true; get the beads and you'll never look back. _________________ Plate of shrimp |
