Can someone please confirm for me that I'm reading the VIN/Chassis and engine numbers correctly? I picked up another beetle (potential project ...potential sell to fund my current 66 project ...not sure yet) this past weekend. Thought it was a 64 ...but the chassis plate up front says 5890360, which according to the numbers posted here on TheSamba would make it a 1963 (October) model. The engine number tells a different story: it says D0432823 ....which would make it a 1200cc engine produced in Nov. 1968.

Am I interpreting this info correctly??

Your October '63 beetle is a '64. just like you can buy a 2015 Jetta right now. The engine number sounds right for a later swap in unit- common. Is your car a Canadian Custom model?

Well, that's what I thought, at first ....however, looking at the number charts here, anything with a number lower than 6 016 120 (built in the calendar year 1963) was still designated as a 1963. Apparently it wasn't until later that they designated models built in the last five months of the year as 'next year' models.

This is 'deluxe' sedan (full headliner, etc) not a 'custom' model.

Ever since 1956 VW designated the next model year to start in August. So that car is indeed a 64 since it was built in Oct of 63.

Yes, I know that now ...after discussing with Everett. I suggested that they update the chassis number list to clearly indicate this fact. As it reads now, one could easily assume (as I did) that the model year designation was based on a calendar year ....until VW went to the 11X system in August of 1964, when 115 meant it was a 1965 model year.

The VIN charts are most helpful in determining the date a car was built- not necessarily to determine the model year. You see, we can all agree when, a particular VIN was built, but from state to state and country to country- there are no set rules about what Model year it is called to be. Some go by calendar year- others by a lead in year. Just like when titles are issued- there is no continuity among US states. Thus, tracking this exactly is impossible with one chart serving the world.

Think of it another way, The break in model years was finally determined by VW in the mid-fifties to also coincide with the break for vacation in July of every year. When workers got back from vacation- they were building the new model year's car. There are many exceptions- especially with coach built cars. That's why someone who owns a car made on Aug 1st gets so excited here- that's day one for their year. I am very likely off in my brief notes on the subject- I'm sure history buffs here will correct me.
