|
|
Anyone got any suggestions as to how to defend ourselves???
A Chinese domain name provider has been approached by a Chinese company who wants to register the name vw-resource.com in China.
I've told them it's OUR site and the name is not available for anyone else to use, but got an email back full of legalese about how the company was insisting and they might still be able to do it (in effect, steal our domain name).
I've sent copies of their emails to our domain/site managers in the USA, but haven't heard back yet.
Anyone got any ideas about how we defend this attack on a free, non-commercial web site set up JUST for the benefit of VW owners around the world?
We are just two guys trying to help other VW owners, and don't have the resources or knowledge to defend this if it gets sticky. _________________ Rob

What you just described sounds like spam to me - I get these emails all the time although usually it's only something similar to my name.
Examples:
"Company in China is going to register thesamba.cn"
or
"Someone in China is going to register the-samba.com"
No real examples of what they say because I get this crap all the time in my spam folder and just delete them.
I have never responded because it's spam or I figured it was some stupid crap to try and trick me into sending them money.
They cannot randomly steal your domain name unless you let it expire and it becomes available for someone else to take over. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks for the replies.
Yes it COULD be a scam.
But it comes from a legit domain registration organisation in China (I checked the headers carefully), and the domain host we use in the USA says that a similar name with a .cn suffix rather than .com COULD possibly be registered and we could not stop it. So that makes it look like it's possible.
BUT - the second email from this place is saying that if WE bought the same name with .cn after it, then no other organisation in China could then buy it. THAT part sounds like a scam, because then the same situation would have to apply to .it, .uk, .ru, .dk and so on - all over the world, which is just silly.
I'll wait to see if my domain host has more to say. _________________ Rob

Yes, someone could register a .cn name and you couldn't stop it.
Same as someone could go register google.cn or facebook.cn if they are not taken.
You said .com though. They cannot steal your .com name.
If you care about having vw-resource.XXX where XXX is .cn or .nl or .org or whatever go register it, otherwise ignore all these types of emails. _________________ How to Post Photos

Sounds like an underhanded way to sell domain names to me, almost like blackmail. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Now wait a second - you saying that there are scammers and not nice people on the internet? I bet you will tell me next that I wont get my big check from Nigeria........
Have run into the same thing and yeah - unless you register with every possible suffix, anyone can do that .biz .net .au etc. But the main focus has always been to sell you the variations....Wouldn't worry about it. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Update.
Yep - I checked out some spam/scam sites and sure enough the wording of a few of them are very similar to the emails I got.
Our domain host also thought they were scam emails.
Just glad I didn't get stung - having never seen that particular scam before - it almost caught me, but thanks to some good responses here and a bit more checking, any more of them will get send straight to the spam folder. _________________ Rob

I'm waiting to get some millions from a nigerian prince that he promised me. I sent him all the info he needed. When i receive those millions, I'll hire an investigator for OP and we'll deal it. _________________ DhK

Feel free to email me directly if you have any other email questions, I have probably seen them all. I get a couple hundred scam and spam emails per day and many are related to web site services, parts and services from China, and other weird business offers. |
Thanks Everett,
I've seen loads of scam emails before too, but never one quite like that.
I do get loads of emails trying to tell me how they can increase the revenue through our site - they obviously don't actually READ any of the site as it does say it's completely non-commercial and we intend to keep it that way. I loath seeing commercial clutter on supposedly "free" sites...ours is truely free (to users anyway - it does cost Dave and I some $ to keep it running). _________________ Rob

I lost a domain to these blanks n there is no recourse. Number one, check your machine for anything that might steal your passwords. Two, make sure your domain is in your name, not in some technical admins or under the control of some hidden account.
With me the eMail trojans did not work, but a little money flashed at my technical admin, and it was gone. |

I get a lot of those too - 99% are spam and the emails are fairly obvious about it as it sounds like a form letter. _________________ How to Post Photos

I could be wrong but I think you can contact the actual domain registrar and they have a procedure to handle this sort of theft. _________________ How to Post Photos
