So I am new to the VW thing as I have always played with muscle cars with big engines and no handling, I just bought a 85 cabriolet for my wife and have a ton of questions, like what other model parts are interchangeable?, is this a MK1 or MK2? what are the big issues to look out for on these cars?

Mostly it is based off of the mkI platform, so driveline and chassis stuff should swap with mkI, other stuff like motor will swap from mkI and mkII. But, thinking of the year, mostly mkI.

Welcome. If I may make a suggestion, get a used Bentley manual first thing. It will prove invaluable. I have musclecars as well and enjoy tooling around in my Cabriolets and air cooleds.

Cheers

in this country they would be called Rabbits, when they went back to the Golf name, the bodies changed(mkII).

Yes indeed they can be very addictive, so be careful. A lot of the mechanical parts will fit from a lot of years. My Mk 1 Rabbit Pickup had a Mk 2 engine. I changed it to a Mk 3 engine and was considering a TDI from a Mk 4. They are great vehicles for that. Bodywise, fenders, bumpers, hood from a Mk 1 Rabbit will fit, but most of the rest is Cabby-specific. All the undercarriage/suspension is Mk 1, but a lot of Mk 2 parts will also fit. If you have any specific questions, just PM me. Also, as they said before, get a Bentley manual...a must-have.

not sure about the hood but the fenders, bumpers, headlights and grill, taillights, dash, interior are interchangeable with earlier Rabbit Convertibles but not standard Rabbits and pickups that were built in the US the convertibles were still built in Germany by Karmann and everything is still German also almost everything under the hood looks different in the Westmorland Pa built cars from the Karmann built cars the engine in the convertible is also a 1.8 (at least in 83-84)base Rabbits i believe is a 1.6
