|
|
So after having some fun in pismo i had some issues. My baja didnt want to go into gear and i heard some clunking accasionally. I pulled the rear bumper off and looked at the motor mounts an tranny mounts and discovered this...
So how do i fix this mount? Do i pull the tranny out and replace the fron piece?
Thanks |

Yeah your going to have to replace the nose cone on the trans. It's pretty common. Especially with out tranny straps. _________________ 69 VW baja 1914

Do you have to take the whole tranny out To do it? And where will i find a new nose cone? Will a local vw shop likely have one? |

Really? Thats odd. AH would have been IRS from the factory. Someone must have used the case to build a swing axle. Who knows what you have inside that box.
At any rate, that doesn't really matter for you in this case. The nosecone in the link I provided will fit. It is a direct replacement. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Yes, you need to drop the engine and transmission. It is easy to change once the transmission is out. Just unbolt the old nosecone, add a light coat of sealant to the mating surfaces, and bolt the new one on after fishing the hockey stick back into position. Not a big deal at all. It sounds more complicated than it is. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Correct picture. It's a midmount, it will bolt onto the nose cone and pushes against the frame horns.
Taking the transmission out is as easy as taking out the motor. Once the motor is out;
Unbolt your cvs on the transmission side and they can rest on the horns.
Unbolt the ground strap and disconnect the shift rod.
Unbolt the two large bolts that hold the bell housing mount
Put a block of wood on a jack, lift the jack about an inch and pull _________________ Wash your hands

Once done, you might want to invest in something like
a padded center strap mount keeping the tranny secure. _________________ Hmm, ruff.

I think you guys have lost our friend.
When power is applied through the transmission of a Bug, the trans tries to do a wheelie. Most of the time, the car doesn't quite want to go along with that. The rear axle of a front engine/rear drive car does the same. For them, traction bars are the solution.
In the Bug, that wheely action tends to break the trans nose casting just like yours did. You might be saying "I didn't wheelie the car!!!" But applying power, especially suddenly, like when you go over a bump or get ANY air and land, does just that. You can replace the nose cone and keep replacing it.
But the FIX for the problem is to add a midmount like Brian showed you or a trans strap like bgs showed. Since your car is swingaxle, it ALSO needs a steel mount with strap at the bellhousing. The axles push on the trans in sideloads and in bumps. You will probably need to replace that front trans mount while you're at it too.
bgs...I quit providing free advertising for Pacific Customs because they do not appreciate it and seem to fail to understand that posting a link to show the product they sell IS advertising, not theft. Ya try to help a guy out and he thinks you're trying to rip him off. _________________ Richard

It also looks like your front urethane mount is shot, which probably added to the breakage. |

Hey guys, i got the motor out and found that i do have a working strap on the bellhousing and the strap in the middle came undone, making my nosecone break. I am planning on fixing it this weekend.
Thanks for the help. |
