Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm pretty close to giving up on these calipers.

Tried more pb blaster, both on the pistons and sprayed though the line connection, heat, etc, and can't even get one more piston out.

I'm skeptical that these things will hold pressure IF I (or anyone else) ever get them apart.

Just called Wolfgang in Redding, open till ~5 Pm today, and they claim the Chinese calipers they have in stock have worked out ok...

Wolfgang had them, but not for a 72 type 3.

I will contact Jim Adney, but as I mentioned before, I am concerned that these calipers may not be usable, and now for another reason.

I have found what look like the correct calipers FS, but only right-side.

https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=522216&cc=1370056

Which is confusing, since my calipers appear to be identical to each other, and look like the photo above, except they both have two bleed screws.

Found this:

http://lists.vwtype3.org/htdig.cgi/type3-vwtype3.org/2011-August/029430.html

The retaining plates on both my calipers look identical, and are "flat", thin sheet metal.

And pad wear was extremely uneven.

So, maybe I don't have the correct Calipers now?

cant help you with your latest questions, but I will tell you PB blaster is pretty poor for what you are trying. Do a search, there are 5x better rust busters out there. a mixture of acetone and atf fluid 50/50 is the best

the two bleeder caliper is the left or right side. so the store only needed one part number for both sides

Just to update, I never located rebuilt calipers for both sides, so I wound up rebuilding my calipers. I finally got them apart by connecting them to another car and forcing them apart using its braking system.

Jim is still rebuilding these, and considering the PIA this was, and the mess of spraying brake fluid, I would have had him do it, if not for the time factor due to two-way shipping.

Man....rebuilding calipers is dirt simple. You could have done it yourself for ....as good as anyone in luding the factory. ....$ 19 for a factory FAG kit from rock auto, $3.99 for a can of cleaner, $2 worth of 1500 grit sand paper and $6 for a can of caliper paint.
Thats about $31 and about 3 hours of labor.

Also....brand new and reman calipers have been available for about $55 each for early and late type 3 from Rockauto since before this thread started. Just sayin.....Ray

Rock Auto is all shades of great until they send you the completely incorrect part and then want to charge a restocking fee for their mistake... and try to tell you your car was altered and that's why their wrong part won't fit despite multiple sources of info to the contrary including factory info... just sayin'.

Thats odd.....I have sent quite a few parts back to Rockauto...about a dozen total over the years. Never had a problem.
all but one time they actually paid for return shipping. Never had a problem with a restock fee either.

Usually it does require me sending whomever I am dealing with for customer service a picture via e-mail of what it is supposed to be and what it is not.

I get an incorrect part or a correct part with the wrong tolerances or fit about 1 out of 20 times...what is that like 5%?
Usually its manufacturers changes or incorrect parts book listing (common with VW type 4 car parts).

The last part I sent back was in July. It was a closeout on TRW ES419 tie rod ends. Wrong angle on the part. I sent them a link to the TRW parts book page describing the 9 degree angle it should have...and picture of the new and old part side by side. They sent me a return label voucher and refunded my money when they received the part.

A couple of parts in the past i had to haggle a little but as long as I did pretty much the same as i listed....it has been no issue.

I find them pretty much the same as working with most FLAPS. I order a part. Wait 1-2 days. Part shows up....asshole behind the counter says it must be the right part....because the book says so and thats what the warehouse delivered. I usually keep the old part with me when I can to point out either what dumb asses they are or how wrong their parts books are.

Laughing I am always on the lookout for type 4 parts hiding in FLAPS inventories....so when I am waiting at a counter and its slow I ask them to look up things like type 4 ball joints a tie rod ends.
I still find the occasional parts chain that has parts books that are F'd up and the parts monkey will ask "upper or lower ball joint".....and I state it only has lower ball joints....and they note..."not according too the book...and the book is usually right"

Mine was a Type 4 air flow meter that came with 7 pins rather than 6, even though all of the other NOS Bosch ones of the same P/N everywhere showed six pins, the car takes six pins, the factory parts book showed that part number with six pins, and the few other '74 L-jet owners I surveyed in a thread here only had six pins. They kept insisting that I had "lost a pin" on my wiring harness and fought me tooth and nail every step of the way- I'd spent tons of money with them over the years and this was my first ever issue. But no, it was my car that was the issue- not their part.

When they FINALLY agreed to take it back, they surprised me with a restock fee- and that was the last straw. Their response? "It's not our fault that you ordered the wrong part". Rolling Eyes

Never again.
