I have a DC code tranny in my Baja, she needs a rebuild this winter as reverse is gone. Just seeing if anyone else runs a DC code trans int their Baja or if there are better options out there.

I went from stock to 3-rib (bus), then to 5-rib (bus) It is amazing where a good running stock 1600 will take you with a 3- rib transmission. However, freeway speeds, not so good.

I have a '72 AH irs transmission, but am no longer planning to run it. I got my eyes set on an '85 or newer ACW Vanagon transmission.

Van,

Is that a nose shift or side shift?

Niether. It is the mid shift from the water cooled Vanagons.

Tail shift = all type 2's through 1979.
Side shift = all air cooled Vanagons. Basically the same as the 091 from the 76-79 buses.
Mid shift = all water cooled Vanagons. Completely redesigned gear set and much stronger than all other bus/vanagon transmissions. 4 speed is listed as 091-1, 5 speed is an 094.

Water cooled engines were introduced in mid '83. They have a completely redesigned and very strong gear set that also includes a full size reverse gear as a bonus. I say I am in the market for an '85 or newer ACW code (4 speed) because they came from the factory with four spider gears in the differential. Rock solid gear boxes great for woods buggies!

Van,
Do realize the 091/, 094s are still called side shifter trans. You can call what ever you want. Be prepared when ordering any parts to explain what you have. It is commonly referred to as a 094 speed by many in off road racing.
As Pablo says the 4.83 P&P is not the good one. The 4.86 R&P is stronger.
Transaxle is longer overall and will set your engine back about a 1 1/2in from a 091. If you are not using a torsion housing then you can move trans forward. The 5speed is even longer.
The stock 4 spider differential can still be broken. It not uncommon for the ring gear flange to break off. I seen it in off road racing.

Most all have worn out 4th gears hubs. Since they are electron beam welded, they are not removable to replace. Finding a good used one in certain ratios is difficult. Weddle has aftermarket racing ones for $200 plus. Weddle also has a bearing to adapt a 091 4th gear (that needs machined to work) to work in the 094

Well, yes, the shifter is on the "side" of the transmission, but to avoid confusion for those who don't know what the two of us are talking about, the water cooled transmissions are said to be mid shift since the lever comes out of the middle portion of the transmission. The Air cooled side shifts still exit from the front cover...just out the side and not the front.

No transmission is fail proof, but these are dang good transmissions. Next step up would be a Mendeola gear box...way out of my budget. Laughing Laughing

Dude, those reduction boxes are so old school cool!! This is an old buggy up in Michigan that has them. Also has the old school cool inverted wide five smoothies. Doesn't get much more classic than that!
