|
Im going to fit these crusty old gauges to the 56 this weekend (if time permits) and I was wondering if anyone had done it before?
Obviously just pulling out the speaker grill and popping them through?
One thing I was worried about it the old Cork float. What are people using as the Cork looks as if it is varnished?
Should I just put new raw cork on the end or update it with something from this century?
Dates on these old things look like October 55 so not exactly the same as my car but close enough.
Got them for free so I doubt they will even work but will still look cool in the old Rat.

free... I think you got ripped off.
there is a short chapter in "making the volkswagen go" about fitting gauges that talks about how to wire them into ovals as well as big windows, but it doesn't cover the rally dash specifically. |

You will need to butcher your dash by hacking out the center bar of your oval's speaker opening. I would hate to see you do that.
Tell you what. I'll double your money on this gauge set and even pay the freight.
I can put these in my oval that already has a carved-up dash. |

What do you mean double my money?
How much would you pay?

Pretty nice gift for FREE. You will have to cut your dash but I believe it is well worth it.
If you search on Moto Meter Rally Pack you should find what you need. |

Please do not destroy your dash to put in those gauges that probably do not work. Ovals that have not been cut up are getting harder and harder to find, do yourself a favor and save the value of what your car and give those gauges to someone that has a car that has already been cut up _________________ (o)\!/(o) Proud owner of a 1972 Beetle, 72 Super Beetle, 76 convertible Beetle and a 69 Fastback

^^^^ I say do it, it will bring the value up on your oval. It's not like you're cutting your dash for a pull out stereo or some modern equipment. Its period correct. i would love to have one on my vert or Ragtop. At the end of the day it's your car, you do what feels right to you.

Hell yeah Im doing it and thanks for all the PM's with offers too guys but I owe it to Tom to drop the gauges in.
Thanks for the Pix 56Cabrio...looks easy! Where did you re-locate your speaker to?
Hopefully post some pix up tomorrow night if I can find a steel hole cutter at the hardware store. I only have wood hole cutters.
