Today was a fun one I got to drive the bug home just under 3 hours from Ohio University to Louisville. Had a great time with friends and the attention the bug draws is unmatched by the looks you get in any other car! Cool

Just realized that the rear bumper bracket slots on the rear fenders do not match (L-R). The passenger side is about 3/8" higher that the driver side. Made me mad! Ordered them both at the same time from the same vendor.
The small holes for the tail light assembly do not match either. Made me madder!

Spent 4 hours elongating the bottom of the slot on the pass side and adding a fiberglass patch to the top of the slot. Filled the small patch with Bondo and sanded. I had to go this route because the paint job is completed and I didn't want to mess up the finish by welding the patch in place. Just need to add some primer and touch-up paint (my painter left me with a pint for touch-up).

I was told these fenders were OEM Quality - jag-offs (Pittsburgese for, well, you know).

Installed my kick panels, with that I installed my Blapunkt 5 1/4 speakers and 1" tweeters. Now if you close your eyes it sounds like the voice is right in front of you. Please don't close eyes while driving. I installed the kick panels above the carpet. I used a carbon fiber wrap to cover the plastic. Now I have 2- 5 1/4 fronts
2- 1" tweeters
2- kicker 6*9s (rear)
1- Kicker 10" sub
Amp 1600 Additive Audio

I am very happy with the set up. Just need to clean up some areas of the carpet. Wiring is all nicely in place with zip ties.

Funny, I did my audio setup as well! I have an older head unit, with two Polk Audio 6 1/2's and an infinity "basslink" powerd sub behind the drivers seat. (Eventually the sub will reside in the luggage area in the rear) By the way, since the panels are not entirely closed, I bought those plastic speaker baffles and sealed off the back for better sound, using cork gasket material from advance auto parts Twisted Evil . They're not bass monsters, but are the crispest car speakers I've come across. The bass is handled by the powered sub anyway! Here's a picture... (taken before I ran the wiring...)

I just acquired a '69 bug. It's the fulfillment of a childhood dream to own & drive a bug, and she's everything I hoped she would be. She's very clean & well maintained, but not without some little issues, such as ...

I got in to go home from work (11:30pm), put the key in, not a peep. Roadside assistance dude helped me with a push start and I drove home. Once I got home I turned the key and again, nada. Figuring on a bad starter, the next day I got an Ultima replacement from O'Reilly's and dove in. After a few hours the starter was switched out, but still nothing. The spring return was toast on the ignition, so I replaced the key part and ignition part, still nothing. The next day I took the battery in to be tested; it had a bad cell so new battery. Finally I started tracing 12v and found it died right before the starter, where a funny modern relay had been screwed into the underside of the body. Ripped it out and went direct to the solenoid and yes! Started right up.

Next I went in to replace the turn signal lever which did not auto-cancel after the turn, and attempt to straighten out the spiderweb of wiring behind the fuse block. Got the new turn signal and put it in, and suddenly turn signals were gone and fuses popping all over the place. Kept at it, replaced the hazard switch which had come apart behind the radio, tore apart and fixed the haphazard wiring to the block but still no turn signals. Finally I realized that my new replacement didn't make a good connection when you tipped the lever all the way left or right. Bogus! I pirated the return spring and one of the broken spring tabs from the new unit, and back in went the cleaned up old unit. Voila! Turn signals, hazard lights, and high beams all working!

Of course I'm omitting hours and hours of head scratching and internet searching for clues, crawling in and out from under the car, and countless trips back and forth to the parts shop. Happily, all's well that ends well and I ended the day today with a cruise up and down Atlantic Ave. in Long Beach. Love this car!

I can't contain my excitement! ISP West recently repopped a batch of 3-1/4" aluminum center caps for the original, 1st generation GT wheels (Riviera fat lip). Anybody who knows about these also knows the caps are impossible to find. ISP's repops are beautiful! They fit perfectly! I've had mine exactly 15 minutes- so I'll need to take off each rim to mount them- but the dry fit test is perfect. Tonight my'71 beetle transforms to complete Formula Vee tribute car.

I wanted you to know because supplies appear limited- and are a tremendous value. If you need them- act fast!
