pistons & electrical work..... no big deal, it's an old Volkswagen. Tell them to fix it, that's half the fun!

If you give him any money back, you're a fool. Wash your hands of it and tell him to kick rocks. Buyer beware.

there is pretty much nothing someone can do on an out of state sale. and even an in state deal, the court would likely side with buyer beware. no need to lose any sleep over it. if he pushes it I would ask for detailed photographs of all "issues" and documentation of what repairs are required. chances are he will not bother to provide any.

That shop has a vested interest in the bus "having problems" because they get paid to do the repair work, that's hardly an impartial jury. Some of these shops love to lay it on thick too, telling in great detail just how horrible the condition of something is, and how difficult and expensive it is to fix. Oh, and don't forget, SAFETY is at risk if you don't pay them to fix it.

Which is why I always do my own repair work. I feel for you in this situation, and the suggestions to find another reputable shop to look at it, fully understanding the situation at hand, is probably the best advice. Maybe someone on here local to the buyer can recommend a shop in the area?

I am told the mechanic states it has a major oil leak, it did drip when it left. The motor needs new pistons and major electrical work, front end missing parts….and so on and so on. I am very bummed as I never had any trouble with this bus driving it several times from San Diego to LA for shows, cruising around town all the time and now this.

I agree with the advice that vehicle sales are as-is so it's his problem now.
Of course I am assuming you have a signed bill of sale to that fact, to protect you legally.
On the flip side of that, if something was misrepresented, then from a moral standpoint, you are responsible for it.

Addressing the list you made:
So the engine is currently apart? Otherwise how does he know it needs pistons?
What electrical work?
What exact parts are missing from the front end?

I'd be curious to see an image of estimate and listing from the shop of what work is needed.

IF the shop looking at it does not know vws that is a issue within its self. I know a guy who had low compression and the shop told him he needed a new engine.... So I adjusted the valves and surprise the engine ran like new. Sounds like to me the guy is having buyers remorse and trying to recoup some of his money. If you do decide to help him out DO NOT let him pick the shop. Instead do your research and find a vw shop in the area, call them, talk to them, and then set up a inspection date.

No matter what you do, someone is going to complain. AS-IS on used vehicles unless you promised in writing to warantee the bus for defects.

Even offering could be seen as an admittance of guilt.

I also said in my first post on this subject, Tell the guy to get a second opinion.
Adding;
From that departure you would be able to guage where the problem is.
Not that it is technically the sellers problem, but this is the sellers headache thread.
I know the quickest way to relieve a headache is to clear the air for awhile.
A second opinion conversatiin would open up the rationality factor of the buyer.

You live in the USA, right?

Though caveat emptor normally applies, if the vehicle sold for a substantial price to a buyer sight-unseen, one might also include the statement: caveat venditor (seller beware), and be pro-actively litigious; that is if one can afford to be.

I think the advice by hitest is best.

If the new owner would like a second professional opinion, I work at a shop that specializes in aircooled VW/Porsche. We would be glad to have a closer unbiased second opinion if he is interested in bringing it to Chicago...

If you "street view" that address there are a few bugs, ghias, t3s,t25s and a Skoda/Renault. No signage anywhere that you can see Shocked . If its a legit shop they must have a number you can contact them on to discuss you're issues. If you are worried ask the buyer for their number?

In this country (not sure about the USA) the test for most legal issues especially in regards to contract law is "reasonability", keep this in mind, if you are honest and transparent you have little to fear...
