So I was watching Stars Wars again for the first time in a long time (the first one).
Early in the movie....In the scene in Obi-Wan-Kenobi's hut right after Kenobi brings Luke and droids out of the clutches of the sand people........in the background...made into what looks like a lamp or a hookah....is a heater bellows from under the back seat of a type 3.
Didn't know where to put this. If you have the flick...check it out and tell me if I am wrong. Ray |

Apparently, Type 3 parts hoarding started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. |

Among designers...the use of automotive parts is an awesome tool. it reminds me of two items from school days.
1. I spent 4 years working on my BSED (Bachelor of Science Environmental Design-architecture) before I got into product and graphic design. One of the most interesting exercises we did early on ......one Friday we were required to go to an automotive junkyard (I already basically lived there because my car was a 411)....and collect plastic, cast iron and aluminum castings that we could get for free.
So a bunch of carburettor, water pump castings and other odd shapes were chosen
We had no idea what was in store for us.
We brought them back as a group. Our professors cleaned them at the car wash and then painted them all white. Then they installed collections of these parts taped and glued together onto 4' x 4' plywood boards. They were grouped into ...shall we say...balanced and unbalanced collages. Each board had a north arrow installed and a scale chosen at random.
On Monday these were all sitting in the lighted gallery. each was described as a possible cityscape, or building site scape depending on the scale attached to it. Each student was designated a spot or angle of view.
We had two weeks to produce full sectional renderings showing what uses these spaces might have, all sun and wind angles and estimates of the structural systems it would require to produce them.
I will never forget the enlightening difficulty of designing a complex casting at 2000 times its original size.
2. In that same year....my materials study workshop had one of the designers of the Star wars imperial storm trooper armor/uniform in house. He went through the vast range of work that went into designing the uniform from a functionality direction (what all the parts of it were supposed to be etc.), a psychological standpoint (why it looks the way it does, color, gloss etc.) and the final molding, vacuum forming production etc.
They spent a Long time and a lot of effort designing items like that in those movies.
Sorry for the length. But from those experiences I can see why a set, model or costume designer would absolutely go nuts for automotive junk for creating science fiction sets.

Seeing a Type 3 part in the original Star Wars series has inspired a stoner thought for the night:
Sometimes I trip out on the periods of time my Squareback has "lived" through. For example, it was born before Jimi Hendrix became famous...and outlived him too. It was also born before the first human stepped on the Moon. It was driving around while MLK was doing his thing, and after he was assassinated. My Squareback has seen some shit. Being such a young guy, comparatively to some of you, it's hard to grasp just how old, and in a strange way, young my car is. I wonder what else my Squareback will live through.
I'll put down my bong now. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

lol, Am I the only one into vws that doesn't do bongs?
I too wonder where my notch had been before I got it, its got a missing chunk in its history between 1986 and 2008 where it did 0 travel, no records or sightings of it in anyone's recollection.
The fact its got 47,000( 75,000km) miles its got less than 95% 2012 model cars here and in better condition, and getting better.
its funny think of things like "i wonder where that stone is that chipped the windscreen right there in the corner is now?" I wonder when it happen? _________________ The best of VW engine development!

no bong here i am only 21, nearly 22, and it is always fun to wonder about all the things my VWs have lived through.
heres another fun thought:
ANY aircooled VW you will ever EVER own....Already exists and is waiting for you to find....
just like my future wife is somewhere out there, just gotta meet her still.
just another fun thought.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

yeah thats true about cars. I always wonder what the original owners would think of when each of them would see each of my cars. I'm sure is would be a blast from the past. A memory trip to the dealership showroom for one resent completed project.
I used to think like that too "future wife", couldn't wait to meet her. As I got older I learned some of the true nature of women and now I dread meeting the one. Avoiding it like the plague
