Maybe yes, maybe no. Sanden builds compressors from kits. That is, they take a type A compressor, attach a type 1 clutch assembly, and a type Z fittings adapter, and there's an A/C compressor for a late Westy. The trick is, they don't do the job onesy-twosey but in lots. Given Westy A/C compressors aren't high volume items, it could be a while before Sanden does another batch. Or not.
In any case, the reason for suggesting looking outside of the obvious VW parts and after-market parts places is there is a pool of Westy parts in the general auto parts supply system.
Hey, I shop VC regularly, for example, but there are times when the FLAPS has what I need when I need it, at a competitive price. Why wouldn't I buy the part there?

I just re-read the entire thread. I'd forgotten (or repressed) how aggravating the job was.
Try the FLAPS first. If they have the part, there you are. If not, then try the alternatives. If they don't have it, try a block of ice in front of a fan... 
BTW, what year Westy do you have?

No compressor drought here. We have all three Vanagon A/C compressors readily available, brand new from Sanden:

Plus we have the York compressors used in air cooled Vanagons, or alternatively we offer adapter kits for fitting modern Sanden compressors to those Vanagons.
We also have brand new direct-fit A/C condensers (which have become very elusive), as well as various other AC parts.

Do what I did and put a Passat AC compressor on your Vanagon. They're readily available everywhere.
Disclaimer: Must install Passat motor to mount the compressor properly.

That is the brand Bus Depot carry. Still holding out for a genuine Sanden. Sounds like I could be waiting a few more months.

So here is some interesting news. I emailed Sanden and told them there is a group of Vanagon owners that are waiting patiently for some Sanden compressors to be manufactured.
They responded pretty quickly with a replacement part number that is a direct fit:
It is Sanden 4708, and is an updated R134a version! The only difference is the back is just a bit shorter, otherwise it is a direct fit. He even sent me schematics (attached).
Sanden 4708 ordered. Can't wait to run r134a again!
BTW, shipping is ridiculous, but it is still cheaper than most compressors out there. Total was $284 for me.

Thanks for the clarification. Let us know how it works out, I am on the lookout for a new one as well.

Doesn't make sense. I called them on the phone and asked to confirm that they had genuine Sanden air compressors. The answer was "no, we have Southwest Air compressors". I also asked if it was possible for them to get any Sandens soon and the reply was "no".
I believe Southwest Compressors are both a brand and a vendor:

I'm sure the Southwest one is good, but I'm trying to keep everything OEM if possible.
I'll post updates here when I get all the parts. New drier and valve coming from Van-Cafe (hopefully with a cookie). |

Schematic? Those drawings are in no way, shape, or form of a schematic. At best
you might call these dimensional drawing for installation. Clearly there
is little engineering left on the planet.

I might be wrong..I think the compressors by design are the same mechanically between R-12 and 134A refrigerant..it is the compressor oil that is the difference. R-12 used mineral oil..134A uses PAG.
It is the compressor oil that sets the spec. If you convert a R12 system over to 134A..you should change the old compressor oil over to PAG oil from mineral oil too. |
