thanks JSMSkater for the help! turns out the distributor we put in had a flipped drive tooth, so it was 180! swapped the wires and fired up. then it woulding go above an idle, so we swapped on a spare throttle position sensor and she revved ! also, before figuring out the spark issue, there was a lack of fuel for some reason. ....turns out i hadnt gotten the pump trigger wire all the way back on so it wasnt turning on. works now!
the smoke was oil spilled from the air cleaner onto the header, no biggy.
the popping however is a biggy! each pop soulds like a hammer on glass, and is accompanied by a puff of black! im suspecting a sticky valve or something along those lines.
next on the list:
FUEL LINES! leaking badely, got all the new stuff, just gotta install. i suspect a tank leak, so gonna have that hot tanked and pressure tested somehow....and got new tank screen and fittings and filter and spare pumps from joe. thanks again!
TUNE IT! this includes: dynamic timing, valve adjust, valve cover gaskets, oil change, run with a full case of AFT for a hour or so, then drain and refill with oil to really wash the gunk out. stuffs been sitting for 12 years or so....then new plugs, and maybe wires, and all new vacuum lines and a full once over with joe again if i dont have a purring engine yet. 
THEN:
drive it around the block, and make a new list of to dos!

Also could be two injector plugs reversed. Are your boots intact- a grey and black boot on each side?

joe took the right two off and put em back on....i have no idea if any are placed correctly...
i really gotta get that book, im gonna order it now and my text books for class to.

| Black boots go to the FRONT (as in front of car) pair of injectors, greys to the REAR. |

Awesome Stuart! I have been out of the loop so long I didn't even know you got a squareback! They great cars, my grandpa had one as his work car for 15 years.
Good luck to you on this project, what are the overall plans?

ill be getting out to the garage again today to clean around the square...who knows...maybe ill dig in and see if it will start again.....let it run for a bit....
i should be makings some fresh progress soon, i JUST finished school monday, so time should free up a bit....assuming the Girl doesnt mind giving up a bit of her time with me...

so its been a while....
i moved the square out to monroe for storage...we are selling our house and it had to be out of the garage.... so its sitting again 
but ill be back at it someday...promise. if not...i have many offers for buyers....which i would rather not do yet.

its still in my head i promise i havent lost the motivation yet. rather, the curiosity is building, and im about ready to drag it back home to get to work on it. saving a bit at work here and maybe this winter will drag it back to the garage and tackle the fuel lines and oil seals it needs. first i gotta get the transmission done on my 78 bus.

visited the square last friday...
really getting motivated to get it on the road soon! got a transmission install to do to my bus, and once thats going well, i really want to drag this thing back onto the road. may even make a trip out to just work on it where it is, rather then transport it back to continue the work.
suggestions on the tank...i suspect rusted holes in it.....thoughts on checking for leaks? i dont , repeat, DONT want to reseal it with a POR kit or anything...never heard anything good about those. just want to clean it out....
really just getting excited overall for VW's....bus transmission, looking for a splitty, and wanna get this running so i can use it! just super pumped up overall!
