After a week in Tulare, Ca, 2 weeks in Seattle and a week traveling from the Midwest through Nashville I got back today. After all the years I finally scraped through enough to find the VIN. Turns out the pan was built in August of 1961, first month of the 1962 models. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

I am working in Akron, Ohio this week so I drove out a day early and made it to the second day of the Buckeye German Jubilee at Jim's Custom VW in Columbiana, Ohio. I had a good time and talked to some real nice folks. I heard the swap meet was better on Saturday but I am glad I was able to make it there today! From Jim's I picked up a flywheel holder, Polyurethane steering coupler, 17mm drain plug tool, Adjustable shift rod coupler and a new brake light switch.

I got a pair of spoked wheels for $35. that have a pair of 235/75-15's on them. I will swap the tires for a more aggressive set. I will sandblast and paint the rims of course.

I also picked up a 1970 dual relief 1600 single port case. I am hoping this will be a buildable case I can use a bunch of my 1500 parts on. I only gave $45. for it.

My pan has never had the shift rod coupler cover so I snagged one for a dollar.

Placed an order with SoCal this morning! I also ordered a tubing notcher from Eastwood as a present for my wife this morning, she will get a LOT of good use out of it on her Jeep builds! I will borrow it for some cage additions on the buggy! I am getting excited about getting this thing back on the trails!! |
How's that notcher working for you?
Mine is a POS. Spun the threads in that chincey thread adapter after a couple notches. NO REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE! What a rip-off. Now I rather hand notch than use that messy wobbley piece of crap. _________________ Brian H.

To be honest I haven't even had a chance to use it due to my hectic work/travel schedule. That and the 1 3/4" .095 tubing I had grew legs and walked away. I was very disappointed when I saw the "Made in China" sticker on it. I was under the impression Eastwoods stuff was made in the US, I was wrong. Had I known that I probably would have just bought the Harbor Freight one. A friend of mine bought a tubing notcher from Speedway motors back in the 90's. It worked great never had an issue with it and we notched a LOT of tubing for our stockcars with it! _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

I dropped off the '70 1600 case at Jim's Custom VW. He inspected the case and is going to line bore it for me. I bought a 1600 crank and rod assembly from Jordan Cyr here on the Samba Classifieds.

I have a stock dished cam and lifter set on it's way for this second engine. My game plan is to put this engine together this winter. Basically a 1500 if my old cylinders and pistons are reusable, if not it will be a 1600 with my old single port heads. I will have to see if any of our Neway valve seat cutters match up with the VW valve sizes. If not I will get out the old Thor seat grinding equipment.
I have been researching the "Dog House" cooling shrouds and may go with that as I see this as a low RPM engine. Any thoughts or input on these? I am thinking about an after market shroud and install the flappers/vents in it. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered

While sitting in my motel room in Seattle I came across this video on modifying the Harbor Freight Tubing Notcher. I'll have to check out these items on the Eastwood notcher.

Picked up the '70 VW 1600 case from Jim's Custom VW. Line bored and thrust cut. The box inside contains the new main bearings. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

Well with all of the traveling I do for work I just have not had a chance to work on the buggy. Tonight I am sitting in a hotel room in Sacramento, CA and I ordered this tubing bender for my wife for Christmas
http://www.jd2.com/p-67-model-32-bender-manual.aspx
Video of it: http://youtu.be/I1cAaOkuvRs
Another video showing it bending 2" x .250 wall http://youtu.be/oQKER-XtYiQ
I ordered the manual bender and a 1 3/4", 180 degree tubing die. The dies are pricy so I figure we can add extra ones as we go. They also have dies to bend square tubing. My wife will be using it to build cages on her Jeeps and I will be able to bend up some side bars for the old buggy _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

In hindsight I wish I had saved up for that model. I don't really have anywhere to mount it though hence why I didn't. I have the affordable bender which is just about "good enough", but I miss the 180* option the most. Could definitely do more with that. I think you can get better CLR's than I can too.
Have fun with that! _________________ Brian H.

Yeah, I really like the 180 degree bending capability! I had wanted a JD Squared Model 3 back when we were racing stockcars and I was going to order that one when I read the reference to the Model 32 being able to bend 1/4" tubing and decided to get the Model 32. I also ordered this mounting bracket from SWAG Off Road along with the Harbor Freight air over hydraulic 8 ton ram so that it will be a hydraulic bender rather than manual. http://youtu.be/q-M-GUO7yME

Well not much has happened with the buggy. Although I worked from home the month of January I didn't have much free time. I made it home a few days in February and left again March 1st. It will be mid May before I get home again possibly Memorial day. I am currently sitting in a hotel in Downey, California.
