Hello, I bought this '72 Super from an estate sale during the winter of 2011 for $1,500. After a few years of hard work and long hours I finally have it on the road and its mostly finished.

Here it is the day I brought it home:

I really liked this car due to the fact that it was unmolested and 100% intact and came with extra parts. It would start and run but only for very short periods of time. Once I got it home, I picked up a carb rebuild kit from the local bug shop and it ran pretty good considering that the last time it was registered and on the road since 1992.

Here a few more pictures:

After I got it titled, I began the deconstruction. First order of business was to completely gut the car and strip it to bare metal.

The car had minimal rust. The pans and heater channels were good so I opted not to do a pan off. The next order of business after i got it to bare metal was a couple coats of PPG epoxy primer followed by a lot of body work to get it straight. I replaced the rear apron and rear fenders due to damage to the apron and both the rear fenders were rusted out around the fender wells. I didn't take pictures of the process though. I also shaved the front turn signals and ordered the mexi front bumper with signals.

I installed a Maxx strut kit from Topline (Jon at Topline is very helpful!) I also ordered and installed a front disc brake kit and front end rebuild kit.

I changed the bolt pattern to 4X100 and my wheels are 17x7, tires are 205/40/17 up front, 225/45/17 in the rear.

Fast forward and here is my German Looker Super Beetle. TMI carpet and upholstery kit.

Very nice work. Doesn't even look like the same car. The changes are really awesome. Can only hope mine looks as nice in the end.

Enjoy, you have a really great looking car.

Overall the ride is really really good. I will be raising it up an inch or so all the way around. With the kid in the back it will bottom out on occasion. And I think it will look better too.

Thank you! Without my wife's support and backing I wouldn't have been able to get this done. She sure likes it when I let her drive it to work, lots of looks.

That is once of the nicest looking Super Beetles I've seen!

You mentioned you took it down to bare metal. How did you strip it and how long would you say it took?

Thank you!

I stripped it the old fashioned way, DA sander, course sandpaper, wire wheels and sanding discs. As far as the amount of time it took it...hard to put a number in the amount of hours I spent. I did it panel by panel, fender by fender. A few weeks id say, but that includes epoxy primer on each panel as it was stripped. I think the thing I looked forward to the least was cleaning the epoxy out of the gun.
