Getting ready to start a winter project on my wife's 79. Question I have is the hood on the car is in really poor shape (cracked, bent and a poor reproduction) I picked up a replacement that I'm going to start doing the body work on and I believe it's from a 74 or 75. Will this work? The only difference I can see is the area around the handle!
Rusty looking hood is the 74 or 75 and the purple is the 79.

You tell us. Looks like the rise for the handle is different. Mount it up and see what happens.

The rusty hood is for an early 1303. Sometime around 1975, not sure of the date, the new hood with the squared off fluting at the bottom and dimple under the latch handle, started. They were a direct replacement, and VW stopped making the old pattern. Since a lot of hoods were crumbled in the 70s and 80s, a lot of early cars (like mine) has the newer hoods.

The early hood you have will fit the car, but it will look a bit out of place. Somehow, most VW nerds will know it was made for an earlier car, and that your car should have the dimpled and squared off newer hood. Normally, it's the other way around. Somehow, newer parts on older cars look better than older parts on newer cars, but maybe that's just me.

I got the hood on last night for a test fit. It fits but the hood hinges are is such bad shape I couldn't really get a good fit.

The car was repainted this purple color sometime in the mid 90's and Im still not sure why the hood was replace with an aftermarket one.
Any suggestions on replacement hinges?
