Just installed new breaks shoes into my 1971 Baja got the tires installed, bled the breaks and went for a test drive. Now the breaks don't even work. Just barely enough for me to slow down. Anyone have any ideas what I did wrong? |

Did you adjust them?
How far does the pedal travel before building pressure?
Any difference if you pump them?
What was the problem that caused you to replace them? _________________ -Russell

You don't state if you even adjusted the brakes, these are manual brakes, you must adjust through the holes in the backplate.
By the way, installing new brake shoes does not typically require bleeding of the brakes. Are you SUR you know how to do brakes correctly and safely?
So maybe instead of "stupid f****** front breaks. drum" it could be "stupid f****** installer" ??? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. So he spelled brakes "breaks" let us fault him for that?? Is anyone here to help people or poke fun at them?
Long story short dude, adjust until the drum can't move at all (evenly if possible). Climb out from under the car, sit in the driver seat, press the brakes (pump if you need to). Get out, get back under the car if they spin adjust same way again. Do this however many times it takes until they won't spin at all after pressing the brakes. Then crawl back under the car and back off of them a few clicks so they spin free but barely touch the shoe pads. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle Sedan Stock

Once you figure out how to adjust them and not to be afraid to do it a couple or few times at first,
might even make them acceptable |
