Well, just like James Brown was sleeping one morning,
After a long night giving it up for the people,
And there was this early aerobics class next door making too damn much noise.
So he decided to take a shotgun over there and make them STFU...
That's how he ended up with that mug-shot, you know.
(true story)
So, here I'm having the same kind of day...
First of all, i take the transaxle and sub off of the tunnel using the hoist.
That went well.
And it started going down hill from there...
Got the tunnel off of the cart,
And pushed the car around from the garage to the atrium, by myself, which is a PITA.
What with kicking the tires to make it turn, and all of these toad-people driving up and down our street, in some big-ass hurry to get to the gym cause their ass is so fat...
After a bunch of struggling and tugging on ropes and trying not to get my fingers pinched, i get the car hovered up again.
Now, this was kind of cute the first five or six times i did it, but but now, let me tell you, I'm getting sick of this struggle...
So, can't you just tell what's going to happen now? Don't have to be a psychic...
The car will hang it's ass out into the rain if i leave it where it sets when the hoist picks it up,
So it has to move forward.
So, me, being all smart and clever, i put the front jack-stands on some furniture dollies, and use a board and the floor-jack to pick up the ass-end...
Gotta mock that tunnel up _again_...
So, got the tunnel bolted up to the body, and i just couldn't resist grabbing the front clip and putting it into place!
This _has_ to be the last time i struggle to pick that miserable garbage front clip and wrassle it through the door, right?
I put it in place, and BAM!
Fucking car falls off of the jack!
I go and grab the shitty little jack to pick the back up, and BAM!
The whole slut-bag POS has to fall off the front stands too!
Apron _used_ to be OK-ish, and the upper part was perfect. No More!
Sand just had to fall out of various holes, just to mock me.
Not like i did't turn the whole thing upside down and blow it out...
So, after much cussing and throwing tools I just got pissed off and picked the piece of junk up and put it on stands. Just like that. No jack. Piece of SHIT!
Trying to find some joy that the clip is in place, it's hard, cause ONE little tit of metal keeps the whole clip from coming home.
Won't set back where it goes...
Pushed the sub and trans back under where they go, but after this whole mess I'm just pissed and hate this whole shitty expensive miserable ass-pain.
Someday, maybe, I'll care about this thing, but right now, I'm about to just go and set it out on the curb with a "free" sign on it.
Not that anyone would even take it....
Did I mention that this stupid rickety shell and all it's parts are over $40K at his point?
Yep,
I'm a dumbass, and I hate my car.
Love, flowers, bunnies and kittens,
Steve _________________ Bus Motor Build

And that's also why you never use bolts - because of "hydrogen embrittlement".
Also why you never blasted parts, you might get silicosis.
And, if you ever actually used wrenches, you might skin your knuckles.
You are correct - if you never work on anything, you will never have struggles or set-backs.
Best to just run a keyboard;
Then you never have to ever get dirty or hurt, and always get to be an expert! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Steve, sorry that happened. Was very excited to read your post from earlier today but the excitement quickly turned into horror and disbelief. That apron is the worst place to have something happen. I'm sure no words will make you feel better but hang in there man. _________________ MonT3

I bought the 6 ton stands for this very reason, and the fact that they go to 23 inches high.
The base is big and wide so they are a lot harder to tip, very stable base.
it's just another learning experience, you learned what not to do, move on to bigger and better things
it will be one of those stories you tell when you're standing at a gathering and someone compliments you on how nice the rear apron looks. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Ouch, that sucks Steve. This is partly why I build a cart for rolling stuff around, and I use my cable come-a-longs for doing the lifting.
When you work by yourself, you have to learn to work smarter, not harder.
And just so you know, I've been there done that before, and was pissed off more at myself, than anything else. It sucks that it happened, but pick yourself up, dust off the sand and move on. It's only metal, and it can be beaten into submission. In fact, grabbing a hammer, and beating on that apron WILL relieve some stress.
Throw a tarp over it for the night, grab a beer, and go relax for a while. When you're ready to attack it again, it'll be there mocking you, I mean waiting for you. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I made my own using a wheels with fully inflated tyre, old brake disk bolted to the middle as the resting point.
very wide foot print and rubber grips the floor. its as high as a standard sized stand. there is no way it can flip over. If you towed the car to tip it, it will just slide off them and not flip at all.
My half brother has some fabricated solid stands that are about 50% wider than normal ones. I had one tip over when I released the jack, the other was slipped and got stuck at an angle and the car balanced on it. so lucky it didn't fall completely.
And those with the adjustable height (lever type with teeth) I bumped one and the lever released it and it dropped one tooth.
After that, never again. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

Dag... You were only a block away when this happened!
You just never know, eh?
The hard part was already done, what with the hoist and all.
I was home free - almost done with the switcheroo - when it all went shitty.
Totally stupid move on my part.
Not the jack-stands fault...
I was in a big hurry, and made a stupid mistake (or two).
Luckily for me, Dave gave me another apron.
Looks like I'm going to have to use it after all.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

I feel your pain on that Clatter, I am with Bobnotch on the cover it up & have a beer, or head out to the surf. I worked in a restoration/custom shop & came in on a Saturday for some personal stuff & the boss had dropped a 31 chev off the stands. These cars have a wood structure that the sheet metal is nailed to. The drop was short 6-8 inches. Every panel had damage, spent many extra hours making it square again. We covered it up & moved it to the corner for a week. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Clatter,. . .
What can I say. . . Shit happens bro!! Obviously, someone up there thinks you need more hammer & dolly practice.
Go surfin'. Take a break. Have a brew (or 10 ). After the sting of the setback softens, the next bit of progress will be all the more sweeter.
Cars are like women; they can be the love of your life, but damn, can they piss you off sometimes!! _________________ Regards,

Where was that ghetto mattress when you needed it Steve?
Hate to see that bent apron after all the work you've gone through dude.
You certainly didn't need that! Hope all goes well from now on and you can put it all behind you soon. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

I'd get out my 90* die grinder, and trim the offending metal back some (take a little off at a time). Then I'd shoot some self tappers in to hold it in place, and using a silver shapie, I'd mark where all of the spot welds are located. Then i'd pull the clip back off, and hit those spots with the 90* die grinder, then reassemble it again with the self tappers. After that, I'd break out the welder and weld it up.
It might be a PIA, but it's still gotta get done.
Just so you know, I had a PIA job this past weekend. I was changing motor mounts (the rubber part) on my wife's van. The left side wasn't too bad, but the right side was a total PIA, as the upper bolt wouldn't come out, and needed to be torched off. Add in that I had to cut a window in there, just so I could fit the torch head into that pocket. I had 7 hours of labor just on that 1 side, versus 2 hours on the left side. At least I won't have to do that again for a long long time. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I've been following this post since its inception. Man, You are dedicated to this car. What happened to you sucks, but hey, it's only sheet metal and it can always be tweaked back or straightened. I was always more worried about you losing a toe, since in many of those pics you guys are always wearing sandals. No worries mate, take a deep breath, that cars was far worse when you started. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Thanks for the pep talk, guys. It helps for real.
Feels good to have others share in my struggle...
Good to 'see you' again, Martin, I still have that dash pad sitting here, ready to go on one day.
After running in circles in traffic on my wife's birthday, eventually meeting you on the side of the highway, I shoulda known this whole thing was going to be a fight!
I'm still going to be hitting you up for some treasures;
These used door latch mechanisms just don't fit with the theme here....
And yes, I'll quit being a bitch....
I could have been hurt, not just the car.
But,
I have always had to get pissed off sometimes to push things forward.
There's just too much resistance out there!
I will say though, that even if i didn't feel it last night,
Shoulda never picked the car up onto the stands without a jack or help.
When i got in the car to go to work today, it wasn't easy to get in;
Made some old man noises, and could barely get into the car!
It's going to be busy for me the rest of the week.
Got a bunch of work to catch up on.
Plus, i need to go and suck my thumb and be all butt-hurt for a while too.... _________________ Bus Motor Build
