yes, under the hood where they branch off to the rear
Or magnetic tow lights work good too _________________ Rick

Is there instructions some place?
The diagrams are hard to follow.

use this diagram, the rear tail light wires are specific to the colors where they go, easier to follow. _________________ Rick

Thats where I was planing to get the chains, ball, lights, and a batt kill switch, tomorrow, today I'm picking up the tow bar.
I'm planing to haul some bulky but light weight stuff in the bug, as long as i keep the weight balanced should be fine right? |

yep I moved from CO to Wyo towing my 60 and had it packed with stuff.
Just makes sure nothing can bump the shifter into gear
And with some of the lights the magnets are not very good so additional help maybe required; tape, zip ties etc _________________ Rick

U HAUL used to sell a tow light kit that you could hook under the decklid/trunk with a flap, you might check that out too. I have a set of them also. _________________ Rick

Here is my 2 cents, as I have towed from CA to NC with tow bar.
1. Saftey chains! Make sure you use saftey chains from tow bar to tow vehicle and from tow bar to vw.
2. You can replace the pins and clips with bolts and double nuts or nylock nuts.
3. A Light kit can be picked up at Harbor Frieght for cheep.
4. Make sure you get the correct ball tow bars come in ether 1 7/8 or 2 in so double check.
5. If your car is lowered you might want to remove bumpers and make sure you get a the tow bar riding level get a drop hitch and turn it up or down to raise or drop ball hight as needed. I hope you do have a receiver hitch and are not planning on towing from bumper!
Plan ahead double check everything, chech it every time you stop for fuel or food and remember you have extra weight that has no brakes on it and will trying to push you when you try to stop so allow extra room. Don't Tailgate!
Take care of any tire or bearing issues before you leave and make sure brakes are not draging
After all that hammer down and enjoy the ride. I did and had a good time no problems I'be done it twice now. And might be doing it again real soon working with a guy in CA bout his car. |

I'm going to bumper tow. but the Tacoma's bumper is able to handle it, (I did research)
I had to do a unexpected test when the bug broke down on me.
I have the Tow lights and chains, both from harbor freight. |

If your tow ball really must ride that high- I'd either shift the load in the truck toward the tailgate a bit (level it out) or expect the tow bar to lift the front of your bug, using the apron as a pivot, on occasion going over dips. _________________

Now I'm wondering... if one were really paranoid about flat towing, would it be more advantageous to remove the axles? |
The only benefit would be satiating the paranoia
The only caveat to a tow bar approach is don't overload the towed car with stuff, and make sure nothing can fall and knock the car into gear while towing
Towing anything, it's a good idea to stop every two hours and check your tow load. You probably need safety chains and a light solution of some sort to keep the cops at bay _________________ .ssS! |

Wow.....
1. With the back of the Tacoma filled with all of your possessions, two people and the bug on tow bar.....I can guarantee that you are barely inside of the capacity of that rig for towing...weight wise.
2. Much as I love a standard trans.... its going to be hard on the clutch when you get into hills or heat
3. I cant believe no one here suggested having one of the excellent transport companies haul it for you. The fact that its a roller, is small and light. ...plus mileage an the cost of fuel is down slightly. .....you could have had it trailered enclosed.....for about $850 or so.
