|
|
Hi,
I'm in the proccess of restoring my 65 bug, I'm doing a body off restoration, so the body is at the body shop the the floor is in my garage.
I've replace the steering box with a new one and I've noticed that there isn't any mark to align the steering box on the axel tube. Not left or right, but the rotation of the box in relation to the axel tube.
Any advice will be great! |

On the bottom of the stearing box clamp there should be two notches on the either side and they should fit next to two nubs on the bottom of the tube the stearing box clamps to. They hold it in place and allow for proper alignment. If they are not there you may have to just finger tighten it and adjust it after you put the body on. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

I didn't find markings or notches on the new steering box so I guess I have to wait for the body and steering shaft for proper alignment.
BTW, I've noticed that the drop arm can swing all the way until it tuches the frame, is it right or I missing some kind of stopper there? |

Because the notches are not on the steering box.

As you can see, the tabs are on top of the axle tube, nothing below to be align with the clamp

SORRY! In my reply, I was simply agreeing with what tb03830 said.
After seeing your photo, I was concerned that we gave you misinformation, so I just went and checked my '65 Beetle . . . it has two nubs on the lower side of the tube and the clamp has two notches . . . just like tb03830 said! HOWEVER, I can now see that my '65 has an aftermarket, adjustable beam!
I then checked another Beetle that has a beam with the adjusters welded in and it has the nubs on top like you have!
So . . . do like tb03830 recommended and wait until you can bolt up your steering column to align the box. _________________ Jesucristo es mi Señor y Salvador! |

My beam is the original beam of this car.
Take a close look at this NOS beam : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1330900
The nubs are on top. |

That is weird. Mine has tabs on the bottom but I do see that yours are on top like the NOS front end, but like 57BLITZ said it must be something with the adjustable front end but generally they are on the bottom. My Adjustable front end has them on the bottom like the origional I replaced.
What Steering box did you use? Mine is crap and needs to be replaced. Any suggestions? _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

The tabs on my '65 are on top as well. On earlier beams the tabs were rectangle pieces of metal not round tabs. Once the steering shaft is connected to the steering box just rotate the steering box until the shaft is centered in the steering column then tighten the box. _________________ Joey
