|
|
I have a pair of metal 1965 vw bug fenders with lights an everything. I want to use them on my 73 baja and replace the fiberglass ones. Any tips or hints? I also have a deck I want to in half for the back. I was curios how the front bucket headlights would look and fit or if anyone has some photos of what they have done or some good lay out ideas.?Thanks |

One of the traditional ways is to put the front fenders in the back and the back ones in the front. Then cut them til they're mud stoppers. I would suggest just selling those fenders and get some fiberglass ones.
Here are some metal cut ones:
But I do like metal half lids:

Cut metal fenders.
Looked at a few of my favorite Bajas on the samba, busted out the cutoff wheel and started. You can use the face of the wheel to shape the cut as you deal with corners.

just get a few four inch cut off wheels, let the wheel do the work and melt the metal as you guide it along. Do not force it or you'll make the grinder jump. just nice and easy and it'll melt the metal making the turns and cuts as smooth as butter. _________________ Herc |

See my build baja bug chewie I just cut off 2in off the end front and back. Tapered them to meet the bottom and cut the rears off to meet the baja cowl. I think they look pretty good myself. I used a grinder with cut off wheel and then used a grinding wheel to pretty it up. |

If you cut down a metal deck lid you want to roll the edge with lots of hammering or the thing will flex and crack in short order. You may also want to raise the mounting of the rear fenders to clear tires and added suspension travel.
Steel front fenders cut all around are on the white car above.

This car was built before the plastic fenders were available, those front fenders are the original 1961 parts. The rears are plastic kit fronts cut down. There have been at least 6 sets of rear fenders on this car. Paddles are not fender friendly....
