Very cool looking Manx. Looking forward to seening it done. I just picked up a Baja with a 2.8 V6 in it. Carb is being rebuilt, so I haven't had i out yet, but seems like it should be a nice powerplant. Can't wait to see more pics! |

This is certainly not the quickest build in the world... But I'm enjoying it. Almost done with the cage...gotta tie the rear-most hoop to the frame horns (sandwich plated) and then start on the engine cage.
I decided to take a small page from the hot rod community for my exhaust design....Passenger side is mostly done (some booger weld cleanup needed). Drivers side is just mocked-up. Not sure how it will sound or how loud (probably!)...but I dig the look. I do have baffles, so that should help. Cheers!

forgot to mention....there will be diagonal bars from 3rd hoop back to the engine cage to triangulate and tie the whole room together... |

I have had stock and aftermarket on my glass buggy. 3x3 with coilover is way better than stock when it comes to sand. _________________ Seabee turbo buggy build

|
|
Its been a while since my last update....made a mini milestone today: The rear end can now support itself!! Followed the lead from some of the guys over at woodsbuggy.com and used airbags for my springs. Easy to setup, tune and cheap. The woodsbuggy guys swear by them. A bit unconventional, but so far I dig.
Still need to fab the shock mounts, but I think I have that figured out. Thanks for looking

|
|
So I've been rethinking my decision to go with completely solid mounts... I would welcome any opinions from the collective wisdom here. The buggy will obviously be just a toy to enjoy with the family. I don't want it to be unpleasantly loud or buzzy to the point where no one will want to ride in it. I know that I could redo the mounts, but I don't relish the thought of the extra work....at the same time, I want to do it "right".
Thanks for your help

I run a stock early trans cradle in the rear and use the yellow Rhino mounts front and rear. Medium off road and hard on road use. Second gear clutch drop on asphalt doughnuts. No wheel hop, no straps and minimal vibration noise.
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot you are running a 091, not a car trans. On my Tow'd, I will be running a 091 with a soft McKenzie's 10* mount. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think I need to redo and fab some poly mounts... One of my hesitations, though (other than the re-engineering) is the heavy lump of v-6 hanging off the back... |

Hmmm
Looking at the car so far..
- big aircleaner on the 4bbl carb right behind the people's heads
- megaphone short headers with only glasspack baffles
- Mud Terrain tires all around
- open cockpit with a flat windshield
- lots of air blowing around inside the car
And you're thinking maybe solid motor mounts MIGHT be too "buzzy" for riders? I doubt any would notice. Only the Princess noticed the pea. _________________ Richard

That is the wisdom I seek...
In a rig like mine, how much of a difference will my solid mounts really make to the "comfort level" vs poly mounts? |

I usually shy away from solid mounts. But on my last build I had to use them due to using a pre-fab Berrien rear bumper and the lower mount is solid with the bumper mounts in it.
The difference is very noticeable between my Rhino mounted Manx and the solid mounted Rascal. I can feel the transaxle gear teeth meshing, every hit of the cylinders, the back lash of the ring and pinion.
But, as Richard stated, with the other more apparent things built in the buggy, will these matter?

Just my point Joe.
People getting into the buggy for a ride will have no idea that it has solid motor mounts and no comparison against the same car with rubber mounts. The exhaust will be quite loud inside the car as will the noise coming from the intake, the pan will resonate with the road noise, air will be rushing past and around them, the tires will be noisy and cause their own vibration for the offroad treads. Everything about the car will be noisy, harsh and will assault most all of the senses. Motorheads and many others will absolutely LOVE it!! Those who will be offended by it's assault on the senses (the "Princess" referred to above) will not be happy with it even with rubber motor mounts. That's fine. They just do not belong in such a vehicle. The car will be like spicy food. Some love it, some hate it. Doesn't mean either group is right or wrong. Just means those who don't like spicy food should not eat it. While those who love it should enjoy it as often as they can. _________________ Richard

More progress to report. Rear cage is complete. Completely removable via split clevis tubing ends and 1/2" grade 8 bolts. One more piece of the puzzle...

This whole car is awesome!
Would you be able to tell me the brand and part number of the airbags?
They look like a good size if I ever want to upgrade my bug.

The bags are #3800 from airbagit.com.
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement guys! Progress has been slow and not steady.
I guess there have been some minor updates:
- I figured out the radiator and mount
- Cleaned / painted the beam
- Installed Delrin beam bushings & thru rods
- Cleaned up the steering rack
- New rack boots
I sold off the old Summers Bros hubs/disc brake setup (too much work to be worth the effort)...so any suggestions for combo spindle hubs/brakes would be appreciated.
