I vote for mud terrains! I have 215/75r15's on my 62 and they look tits. They ride fine and increase your top speed because they are so tall. Disadvantage is it is a bitch to get them into the rear wheel well! You could run the next size smaller and probably not have that issue. Big nut trans would be nice too.

Please continue to keep us updated.

Coming along nicely. The roof and nose work must have put a smile on your face.

It's time for me to make a decision on what trans to use. I am leaning towards a stock big nut rebuilt with maybe a different r&p for higher top speed. I have a type 3 swing axle gearbox here, and access to a big nut rgb. Will a stock trans go 65 mph? I want the bus to be quicker than stock, not a drag bus though. I just don't want to be doing 55 tops like some old buses I know.

Running 205/75R15's with a 1641DP/34PICT3, and a stock big nut(mines a 65) I can do 70+ on the flat.

I would assume 55 MPH is generally a horsepower limit or dinky tire limit.
With a Big nut, and 26.5" - 27" tall tires, this should not be a transaxle limit.

I have a big nut with taller gearing and RGBs with a 1776 running Kadrons and it will do 75mph with ease.

Taller R&P and/or different 4th as well?

With a stock big nut and 27" tires your turning about 3656rpm at 65mph.

With a 3.875 R&P/27" tires your doing 3237rpm at 65mph.

It depends on the engine you're going to run as well. The 13 window at the shop has a bigger motor in it, it gets around town just fine but you can feel that it definitely wants longer legs in the trans when out on the highway. It will go 65 no problem, but I wouldn't want to do it for an extended period of time. It has a big nut with 205/75/14's (26.1").

I'd have Bill build a stock ratio big nut with a 3.875 and call it done. Use 205/70/15's (26.3") no need to go nuts with huge tires.

I did a bunch of research on tires and gear ratios which was compiled from owners manuals and Coker Tire's website. Everett posted it here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/50_67_bus_gear_ratios.php

6.40-15 tires were between 26.88"(BFG Silvertown) and 27.01" tall(Firestone Champion). I've also measured old worn 6.40-15's @ 26.5 and 26.75" in height. My Kuhmo KL78 tires are 27.1" and the speedo is bang on the "Speed Box" ap on my iPhone.

You could get some slimmer 195R15C radials from tires-easy.com.

Everett has a set of the Nexen SV820's for his 1961 DC.

I forgot about those Nexen's, those look great if you're after a stock diameter radial that isn't too wide.

Tire diameter plays a role in rpms but it isn't as big as everyone makes it out to be. On my old Beetle I swapped from a 24" rear tire to a 26", the difference was only 300rpm at 75mph.

that is almost 10% of the rpm range and just enough to make the difference between going 65 or 70... on a bus with RGBs that is huge

Yes, but like I stated that was a full 2" change in diameter, about 8% taller. Going from shorter than stock to taller than stock. If you're starting at 27" tall, there isn't enough room on a bus to bolt on a [modern] tire that's 8% taller (just over 29").

So T, is this Betty getting a stock dual port or what?

my point was that buses have RGBs which makes every engine rev count 1.3 times....

I don't know, I have a 1500 here with dual ict's or whatever. Beyond that I would need to buy an engine, does a 1500 sound like a useful engine if only temporarily? I really want to drive the bus SOON, so building an engine for it is not the optimum choice right now. I rather make it a driver first then make things better for the long run. If'n you have some room, would you mind dropping that big nut off at Bill's for me? I must owe you something for the first 2 times you took him my crap. Very Happy PM me so we can talk more.

If it has good compression, end play is ok, and makes oil pressure, use it!

I sent you a pm...

Cool, should be a few weeks or so before he has the trans rebuilt for me because of sandrail season. Laughing In the mean time I need to cut the shift rod coupling off and tear the front floor out. The fuel tank was really clean and nice inside, just need to rebuild the reserve tap. It had a small amount of fuel in it that was very orange and smelled bad. I sprayed the brake line fittings and other nuts and bolts with some wd40 in anticipation of replacing the master and the wheel cylinders. Got the front bumper off and the chin looks sharp, minimal work is needed on the bumper to straighten it out. Checked the center pin play and it is unacceptably loose and sloppy, I'm sure the entire front end is going to need the works. Lots to do and thanks everyone for peeking in on this thread, I will keep updating and get lots of pics up soon. Cool
