My '50 Standard was also a Hoffman import , although it had option M 001 ,
" chrome trim " , which included chrome door handles inside and out , bumpers and hubcaps , but no side trim . Color is also " not mentioned " , but was actually L-21 Perlgrau . I believe that the cable brakes may have been a problem for imports , in that some states required a separate emergency brake system , which was not possible with cable set-up . Hoffman Motors seems to have been pushed aside the same way Ben Pon was , when VW decided he had served his purpose . My experience having worked for a Long Island VW dealership in the mid to late sixties , was that the factory called the shots as far as distribution was concerned , and " allowed " dealership franchises as long as you played by their rules , you sold what they gave you ! All options including white wall tires were installed at the dealership . |

Guys
This is an interesting topic and one I have been keen to see a registry started for years.
I have an October 1951 15A Kabrio, chassis number 1-291837 and it was delivered to Hoffman/VW Distributing New York on the 25th October 1951.
Colour is Black & Ivory with Red leather interior. The only M option was M20 which was MPH speedometer.
This car has a very interesting history that so far have traced back to 1977 when it was donated to a musuem in Cleveland by VW dealer Fred Vincent VW,the list of previous owners includes,Dennis Hobday,Steve H Wood(RIP),Perry Urena,Jim Barrington of Gmund Porsche fame.
I have all the Hoffman brochures and also the original Hoffman Dealer Plate from 1951.
Hoffman is a passion of mine, and in fact I just had my first child and we called him Maximilian......
Would love to find out more about other Hoffman cars that are still out there,or if anyone ese knows some history on my car. |
What does the dealerplate look like? Do you have a picture? _________________ 1950 Hoffman 11 G 1-0174999

Congrats! Tag, you're it...you now have posted what is probably the oldest known Hoffman split in the US (at least mine was the oldest VIN I could find for the past 12-15 years or so). There are two of us here on the Samba who believed we were the first few splits 'officially' ever shipped to the US, based no only on our VINs, but also from feedback we received regarding the first shipment to arrive in the US for Hoffman. Do you happen to have the birth certificate and can you please share the exact build and shipment dates? My 50 standard split is VIN 1-0179773 (June 1950). |

Tom McCahill tested one of the very first Hoffman split demonstrators in Mechanix Illustrated magazine, and the car appears to be a brown Deluxe with tan wheels. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

It's in the Oct. 1950 issue, and McCahill mentions attending the cocktail reception for the VW in Hoffman's showroom.
McCahill later said the editors held the article for several months before publishing it because they didn't think there would be any reader interest!
The link posted by kdf38 was actually McCahill's second VW road test, which was a zwitter. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I recently bought a 50 11a that is on Kevin's list already. It's up towards the top of the list with a delivery date of August 22 1950. Is there any record of when he received his first shipment? _________________ Cheers!

not likely a Hoffman car being the fender's beat up, and something with later 50's bumpers is being offloaded.

The dented split is a '45 model that was the winner of the "America's Oldest Volkswagen" contest in 1960. The woman is Barbara Nordhoff (daughter of Volkswagenwerk General Manager Heinz Nordhoff), presenting the keys to the 500,000 and 500,001 VWs imported to America to the two winners -- there were two winners because actual ownership of the car could not be determined between the two.
The 500,000th VW is seen being lifted from the ship in the background. The '45 was "restored" by Volkswagen and used for promotion. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

So I read that 604 splits were imported into the US in 1952. Anyone have a theory or guess how many were zwitters? Being simplistic averaging 50 cars/month. 3 months of zwitter production = 150ish?
My zwitter left the factory for Hoffman's Dec. 1. 1952. Considering shipping time it had to be either close to the end of the year or beginning of 1953.
Does anyone know how many zwitters were produced in 1952?
So much mystery. _________________ Bill |

My thread... awww warms my heart to read it again. So... I sold this car a while back.. who bought it? Randy Carlson flipped it to someone and it's some sort of BIG secret. Oooohhh. ahhhhh..... The person who bought it should probably contact me as I have some ORIGINAL parts that came on this car still. Just found them while moving. _________________ DB
