we just bought mrs rubbachicken a 2002 passat wagon, it only came with one key, there are plenty of fobs available on ebay, programming them at VW is going to cost $120 +
is there some where else that can do it cheaper, i'm in san diego california

The "fob" for unlocking and locking doors can be done by you. Programming the "pill"/chip in the fob for starting the car can only be done by the dealer.

The first part is described in the owner's manual.

Go do a search on www.vwvortex.com
you'll find guys that make you a new key & fob, and once you get the new one, he explains how to train the key/car to work together.
