Just surfing around and came across some new Videos posted by the guy who built that Dual Sports Manxter which won best Manxter or something at Big Bear 2014.

Over the years I have been asked a lot about getting a Full Auto in the Manxter but never actually built one. It is good to see it has now been done and the results are pretty sweet.

Anyway here are the vids for anyone who is interested, might give you some ideas. I see it is also for sale on Ebay with a heap more details on what bits and pieces he used. Starting price $44k seems like a descent deal

Not sure if the girls come with it or not, but it seems a Nice Auto Dual Sports Manxter attracts the women better than my manual model hmmmm

Anyway thought it was worth posting as it showed you could get a full Auto Manxter and it doesn't seem like much if anything has been cut up.

I got to take a good look at the Manxter at Big Bear. He is running an ecotec 2.2L with a custom automatic transmission. Mike lost a leg and the automatic works well for him. He and a friend built most of it and appears to have done a fantastic job. I could see where an automatic could be highly desirable.

From the cover page at subarugears.com

"We do NOT manufacture ring and pinions for the 6 speed STi transmissions or Automatic transmissions."

I remember years (more likely decades ago) a full length Koyote 2 buggy built on an automatic Type 3 Squareback chassis. IIRC the floorpans needed narrowing and a rear motor mount fabricated from the rear enging cage but it was quite an easy build and it worked really well.

But how well do the VW auto transmissions hold up? In all my years I have only seen one T3 built up with an auto trans.

From what Jeff Fields told me they hold up fine as long as built and installed correctly. The Transmission in that Manxter is out of a T3 but I don't know much more than that. I know that Jeff supplied the output flanges to suit 930 CV's.

An article from DUNE BUGGIES 1969.

Tex Smith was a little ahead of the times. The article raved about how great the automatic trans was, it was going to be the wave of the future.

Are there any 4 or 5 speed automatic trans that will fit into a VW?

Most are using Type 2 which is 3 speed.
