Here is my solution to using a block of wood with a floor jack. Made from 1x4s, it is about 13 inches long and raises the jack up 3 inches or so. I've been using it for 14 years or so and its still going strong.

Nothing really special, but I thought I would share.

If more people did this there wouldn't as many bugs with bent transmission cradles.

By your measurement, I'm seeing a height increase of 1.5 in.
I use a wood piece as well, but have to balance it on the jack saddle. Yours is a better idea...

i took a 18" square 3/4" plywood and used a cheap 15/16" socket bolted to the center and it fits into the socket of my floor jack and rest the entire engine on it. i could send a pic if someone was interested. works well for me as the whole engines weight is over the whole piece of wood.

That's a good idea as long as you have a better quality floor jack that allows you to remove the saddle. On some of the smaller, cheaper jacks, the saddle is fixed in place (but then, you wouldn't want to drop an engine using a cheaper jack anyway...) Keeps you from having to balance the engine on a small saddle.

I use scrap 4x4 with a bolt through it that loosely fits the same hole my Jack saddle fits into. Similar to rtope13. That straddles the trans horns or frame head well for jacking the car. For engine and trans r & r I have one of those motorcycle jacks that I got from gift cards and it's just best for that.
