What is the name of this part? The large rubber pipe that runs from the bath to the carb intake. The one on my bus is toasted and needs replacing. _________________ 1970 Westfalia - Evangeline

Shop that part number at the supplier of your preference, or just buy that one, seems they all come from the same manufacturer and aren't that terrible a reproduction. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

|
|
Started clearing out the interior of my 79 Riviera and came across this access hole to the Fuel Filler when removing my rear passenger panel in the cargo bay.
covered with duct tape. I don't smell any gas in the bus, but just seems really sketchy. Any thoughts on best way to cover? First bus and don't want to do anything to dumb, especially with anything that concerns fuel.
Thanks,

I don't like any open holes between the engine bay and the cab that fire and smoke could use as an access. I would get a piece of galvanised sheet metal and make a cover for the hole that you can screw or pop rivet into place, sealing it with high temperature silicone or fire stop caulk. |

Have a 73 bus. Getting ready to bring it home after a year and a Half l in the shop for remodeling. The mechanic says you have a type of power brake system, but I don't know if it's working. Come to find out in the manual it's the servo. I think it has been modified.. Is it necessary that this works in order for me to drive it. The front brakes are fine, and I have plenty of pedal but I need to take it about 15 miles to a mechanic. Is it safe? |

IF the brakes are otherwise in good condition it will stop fine without the power assist, but it will take a lot of pedal pressure. It sounds like you are pretty unfamiliar with this vehicle so drive with extra care at first. |

Yes. I'm learning new things daily. When my fiancé died, he took his knowledge with him. He was a wiz on this bus. Thanks for the reply. |

I agree with Wildthings that it should be covered with something solid and sealing. I recently fixed up some PO fuel sender access butchery by bending up some galvanized steel. Here's a link showing the work - perhaps it'll give you an idea: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7379081#7379081 |

Thanks eche_bus, i have been following your restoration very closely, and you have already helped me immensely from that thread. I would have to guess the same PO that did the fuel filler also did the fuel sender access customization to mine as well. Apparently got back into the cargo bay and went bananas. Definitely going to close them both off, and seal them up.
Appreciated. _________________ 79 FI CA Riviera

Sorry for your loss. What a fun way to maintain his legacy though be keeping the bus running. |

|
|
First Post! I hope this is the right place for this... It's probably a dumb question for you pros out there.
I recently scored a sorta-running 77 Westy on its at least 3rd engine. The current engine is a S/N GE030728 which the net seems to tell me is a hydraulic lash square port engine... And it's the ports that I'm curious about... I realize that "square" is referring to the exhaust ports, but is there anything different about the heads that I need to consider when looking at new intake manifolds and carbs? Or will any manifolds that fit 'oval ports' fit mine?
I'll also take any advice about what carbs to get (I know that's a can of worms). The current one is a Motorcraft/Holley 5200 from a Pinto or something and it kinda works, but not well...
You can ignore the yellow tape and extra boots. I was fighting vacuum leaks and have it (probably temporarily) fixed with the 'clamshell' ones and rtv.
I'm new at these forums, so I hope these pictures post correctly...

Welcome, a GE could have square or oval exhaust ports, you'll have to look underneath to find that out. Also don't assume it has hydro lifters, those also get swapped, either way you still have to adjust them now and then to monitor valve condition. The intake ports are all the same so carb choice is up to your wallet, if it's cheap and reliable you want put the FI back on. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks busdaddy! I checked underneath and they're square exhaust ports. And good thought on the lifters having been swapped out.
I appreciate the help! |

The only way to confirm is remove a lifter assy and a pushrod and peek down the tube, if they have wire circlips on the inner periphery of the pushrod cup they are hydraulic. Read up on tightening torques for reinstalling the lifter assy too, easy to F that up. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hi Everyone, Greetings from Bali, Indonesia.
I am about to buy this bus. The current owner says its a '79 Micro Deluxe.
I'm really keen to find out a bit more info about this bus.
I haven't seen many with the 12 windows like this one, is it original?
Also, does anyone know if this was made in Brazil or Germany?
Any info anyone can tell me with these pictures would be really helpful.
Thanks so much.

Thanks Notchboy! cheers brother
Yeah its still in great condition i think, just needs a thorough clean, kids have been playing in it! There is a little bit of rust bubbling through the roof and door sills, that shouldnt take much to fix, and the floors are all great.
The vehicle has been sitting around for a year without any use. I've tried cranking it over with my hands on the belt but it wont budge, apart from a tiny bit of play back and forth. I'm a bit worried about putting a battery in it and cranking it as its probably seized up and i dont want to damage anything, and if it wasn't and i got it started, i'd be worried about a sticky valve coming through the block. I'm going to likely have it towed to a vw specialist i know, who will bring it back to life.
Although the rumour that interests me is that the brazilian built kombis were of a lower standard of engineering?
Is this true? If so, what exactly was the issue, was it the engines?
It won't put me off buying it, i just sold my '65 bug so i could buy it lol
Here are some more pictures
