What if Volkswagen actually would have done a coupé with reasonable competitive performance back in the late 50's?
I have played with the thought and am now in the process to transform my own lowlight to an S-Ghia.
Read more about my reasoning:

Iteresting read, Look forward to following this thread.
Do you plan anything with the suspension like a camber compensator on the rear and sway bar on the front? |
The Ghia actually had front anti sway bar before the beetle, so I'm keeping that one. I will add a steering damper as it is required for the Swedish car inspection when installing a stronger engine.
As for a camber compensator Porsche only did use it on the more powerful models. For a Ghia-S with lower performance I guess VW would not have taken the extra cost to add one (in any case the Ghia is better in that respect than the Beetle due to its lower center of gravity).
When it comes to brakes I don't think VW would have put the extra cost in putting Porsche type brakes, probably they would have opted for slightly larger steel ones. However, I will run 356A brakes as this is the only available bolt-on upgrade from the time. _________________ __________________________________________ |

Nice reading.
What difference is needed for the coil for high compression engines? |
Bosch had 6V coils in different "performance" categories back then.
VW did use coils of a simpler type called: TE6A3 or TE6B1 etc.
Porsche did use TK6A3 (0 221 101 001) which has properties better suited for high compression engines. For the aftermarket Bosch painted it blue and called it TK6A4 (0 221 101 003), better known as the "Bosch blue".
For extreme engines, like the Carrera, TK6A5 was used. The latter one is recommended in "Souping the VW engine" from 1959.
I think a good ol' blue is good enough. _________________ __________________________________________ |

Great read!
This will be an interesting build.
For the record I have (in name only) the only "Autobahn Edition" Ghia
I felt the designation appropriate given the subtle modifications made to it.
I look forward to your updates! _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I'll keep you posted. Do you want to share any picture or info on your Autobahn Edition? Sounds like an interesting concept. _________________ __________________________________________ |

My lowlight has a 1500sp in it. That extra power is great, athough it doesn't become a 356...
And of course back in the day you did have tuning firms that could add some hp to your oh-so-slow lowlight (Okrasa, Judson, Speedwell and such) _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank
you don't have to be crazy to be into VW's, but it sure helps!!
.... if it ain't dutch, it ain't much! |
