Has anyone ever replaced a trunk liner in a 1965 bug? If so can anyone show picture of how it looks installed?
I just got one on from Jbugs (heavy cardboard) and i can not figure how it make it fit.
Some instructions would be nice !
thanks |

Im not sure what Jbugs liner looks like, but this is how WW sells theirs. It should just sit down on top of the gas tank just like in the picture below.

Firstly, you have to fold the Front End into a triangular shaped tube like that picture above.
Then you have to CAREFULLY bend & wiggle the cardboard piece into place. The area around the trunk hinges is the hardest, but if you go slowly, you'll figure it out.
By the way, removing it, is the same idea, go slowly, and remove the area around the hinges/springs first, and it will go fairly smoothly. _________________ '67s Rule & '71 Buses Too! |

A little trick that I just did on my wifes 61 was to insert a strip of 1/2" plywood in the front strip to give it a little more "form".
Something else - I had sprayed the liner on my 65 with several coats of Krylon clear to make it easier to keep clean - first one or two soak in, but by the third coat you get a gloss and its held up for several years on the 65. Wish I had not been so anxious to get the liner in her 61 or I would have done the same thing. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Ok, I'll come out and say it. Ewwww. Sorry to pass on personal opinion. I guess it's that keeping it as original as possible would be the choice of many.
I'll all about how YOU want it to look though. I just hope you didn't tack my parents orange shag from the living room from when I was a kid...cause then we would have to.....oh..never mind.

The carpet i put in is the preform kit from TMI. I found it makes the whole thin more ridgid and a better fit.
i trimmed off the wire cover part, it was too tall. plus i had a empi one already painted.
i will post pictures this comming week.
thanks
ps any orange shag carpet left over ? I need to do the interior ! let me know. Green would be ok... |

Spraying clear on that liner seems like a good idea. Maybe I'll do mine with PPG clear with a gun. I am so afraid it will stain easily without some protection. |

This is something I have been debating to ever do again. The clear helps seal and make it look pretty, but if you use the trunk (which I do - a lot), the scuffs seem to show up worse. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

My 67 has the original trunk liner (and dash back cover), but it's in really horrible shape. Someone, sometime long ago, must have spilled motor oil right in the middle of it and I guess over time, even though they cleaned it as best as they could, it started to split and kind of rot.
So, based on that scenario, perhaps clear coating it would protect it some.
I just hate to get rid of it. So, I've laid some black auto carpet down to kind of disguise it. The carpet stays in place due to my canvas tool bag, California Car Duster, extra belt and lug wrench sitting on it. The folded lip of the trunk liner still shows its there and it's not in as bad shape as the liner itself, so everything looks nice.
At the recent Flanders (NJ) air cooled show, Chris Vallone (Classic VW Bugs) had a really nice liner in his new 51 Bug. Instead of the large staples that hold the stock mult piece liner together for that year, he used brass rivets which looked great. Not stock from the purest's point of view, but very, very nice. It looked like it could have come that way from the factory. _________________ 1967 Beetle

I have a new repro liner and wiring cover from WW. It fits great, but has a very dull, flat appearance, and does show some scuff marks. I've actually thought about waxing it to give it that semi gloss look (closer to original) and maybe give it some protection from scuffs. Has anyone tried anything like this?
I almost imagine a wax coating, like you get on some vegetable/produce boxes. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

try the wax on an inconspicuous corner....some car waxes will seep into non metallic surfaces and leave a milky white sheen that won't come off.....I made that very expensive mistake back in my 56 chevy days _________________ 63 two fold rag

I don't think I'll clear coat it because it will be shiny and even with a flex agent it might chip off. Since this is a show car I guess I'll leave the liner out until car shows. My son said the tank and trunk look so good that I should show it that way. Undecided. |
