I PULLED THIS VALVE FROM A RUNNING ENGINE TO REBUILD THE HEADS. The valve rolled off the lathe bed and hit the floor and snapped in two. You rarely see an exhaust valve moments before it drops and works its way to the oil pan
You can see what little material was holding on the rim with the centre rusted.

Bear in mind....most valves are two pieces. The stem is made seperate from the head. They are usually friction/spin welded together or sometimes machine induction welded.
It looks like the weld was improper and either leaked and oxidized...or may not have pentrated enough and trapped moisture/oxygen between the two parts. Ray |

BUY LOTTERY TICKETS your already $1000 ahead- you might be on a roll.
Fell off the bench and broke in two
That looks like a sodium filled 9mm exhaust valve that might have been machined wrong or stretched at the joint.
May nave to rethink using those- or at least give them the "fell off the bench test". _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

I put all new valves in the T4 but I kept the old ones because the margins were great and the stem was good. Thought in case of a pinch. That pinch would have hurt! |

Stem was good to use as a tent spike- I've never seen a valve fail like that that wasn't in a running engine. Glad I bit the bullet and replaced all the e valves going in the 2.0.
