My name is Benji, over the next couple months ill be working on my two 356's one is a 63 C and the other is a 57 speedster super. I dont know too much about the cars and signed up here hoping to gather some info while im working on them. These cars have been in a barn for over 30 years and are in pretty tough shape.
first question- I snapped the rear hatch cable, how can i open the rear hatch to access the motor?
Is there a manual youd suggest i buy?
thank you guys

Unless someone put a wire you can reach directly to the latch it's going to be a challenge! Not sure if the cable housing would do it if you pull hard enough on it somewhere. Also ask here if you can't get an answer here on the Samba:

Welcome Benji.

On my 59 there is a hole (should have a rubber plug in it) directly below the rear latch. You need to look up from underneath between the engine & the rear body. Insert a rod & "lever" the latch towards the drivers side. If it is frozen I have no clue.

Will you be restoring or just getting them roadworthy? I too am from NJ.

Elfrinks manual is a good book. Find it used on Ebay. Also the owners/drivers manual that came with the car has a lot of info.

Benji,

Welcome along. The speedster probably has like MMW says this version. The 356C probably also. I had one can't remember.

Anyway this is for an A version

No hole on the C. You have to remove the left engine grill to access the latch.
