Alright, doing a Google search helped me find a 1967 EMPI catalog, i hope we can all be friends now..but im still a little lost on how they lowered the front of the car, did they pull a couple of the bars and compensate by stiffer shocks and a sway-bar? a big bag of sand? said F@&% it and didn't lower the car?
This should be the end of my questions..for now |
What about a Select-a-drop? Back in the late 60s they were the only way to drop the front of a T-1.
Not sure if this is a real one or a home-brew, but you get the idea. Weren't early 356s fitted with the same type of setup from the factory? Couldn't find a pic of that. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

It would be great if some of the suggestions here were broken out in an FAQ to help the newbies understand how to implement them. Some of these I've known about having read these and other forums for many years. Some of these were covered in some of the 60s magazines, but not in any real detail.
For my purpose, my goal is to implement upgrades that would have been attempted in the '58-59 timeframe - while staying legal under vintage race rules. For example, if the KG had drum brakes I'd have to stay with drum brakes of the same type as the originals.
Of course, if I can 'cheat' just a little - say, add Type 3 rear drum brakes, then I wouldn't tell anyone unless they noticed. I'm trying to be close - not exact. _________________ Conrad @ Air Coolers VW Gang http://aircoolers.org

a "cut'n'turn" beam would be period correct I guess, no equipment involved really besides a welder! |

I'd start my "period correctness" research by getting copies of these:
published in 1959. this has been republished recently so can be picked up for a reasonable price.
published in 1960, originals rather expensive, but it looks like someone is now reprinting them at a decent price. of the two books I prefer this one.
Boonies has some good magazine articles from the 50's in his gallery.

the edmonson ghia is also a good idea of how modified a race vw was.

I think a lot of the stuff mentioned already has how to posts in the oval or 58-67 forums.
i'll do a how to on the handbrake mod when I finish it.
if anyone wants to know the basics of putting halda's into vw's i'll write that one too.

I appreciate your guidance without getting the standard "Samba-smackdown". I'll go read now. _________________ Conrad @ Air Coolers VW Gang http://aircoolers.org
