Does anyone have an exploded view/picture of the handbrake adjustment mechanism for a pre 55 Oval.
My chassis came in bits and I have a bag of parts I have now cleaned up and want to fit as soon as I can.

You're in luck as it looks that almost everything is present. Finding some of those little pieces can easily drive you mad.
I said almost because you don't have the tiny split pin that goes on the very end of the push rod. But those can be bought at a hardware store for pennies. |

I hope you have the threaded pin still in the brake shaft, that's another piece not in the pic

yep, got the handbrake rod and the threaded adjuster in the end, all cleaned up and smooth

Why exactly would they set it up like that? A rod goes all the way forward to pull the rear brakes?

It was up there because it was where the cable-operated brakes on Standard models were adjusted. It took them a few years on Deluxes before they changed the design. From the KdF Wagen manual archived on TheSamba, this is a pic of the cable-operated layout.

Thanks glutamodo, I'd never seen a picture of a cable brake system before. I didn't realize that they all went forward before going to their respective wheels, but it makes sense.

| So is the handbrake pushrod the reason the 53/54 models had the heater knob behind the the handbrake? |

I'll try to post a photo of the area under the fuel tank of my '47. Without the master cylinder and brake hoses, that area looks so clean & empty. Just a pair of tie rods & a pair of cables, that's it. |

Does this plate have a small round hole on each side? If so than this is the plate that holds the ebrake pushrod spring in place and under tension.

The bottom piece goes on the e brake rod followed by the top piece. The e brake cable threads come thru the holes on each side and 2 nuts are threaded on each cable. Also a pin is driven thru the shift rod tip.

It looks to me like at the end of push rod there are 4 pins with wires for hand brake. Two for rear and two for front. Am I wrong?

Did you get parts reassemble sorted out? I'm facing similar dilemma...took beam off to install new beam, disassembled behind cover plate to clean up. Unfortunately I did not photo document and forgot how it goes back together!!
