1974 VW Thing and I am trying to fix an issue from the previous owner. Guy said his son broke the wiper stalk off of the thing. when trying to use either the wiper or the turn signal, only thing that happens is the light at the bottom of the cluster comes on solid. It does have an aftermarket steering wheel So, I replaced both the wiper and the turn signal switch from the thing shop. Still the same thing, Anyone have any ideas? It doesn't look like it has been butchered up or anything. I believe somehow my 74 has a 73 column? I did buy the correct switches and the connector at the bottom of the column fits up perfect. I originally bought the 74 switches and they didn't work.

Try cleaning the fuse terminals and check the turn signal relay.

What kind of bulbs do you have. If you have LED turn signal bulbs and they aren't modified to provide enough resistance the turn signal relay won't function properly. Also if any of your bulbs are burned out or shorted to ground the same thing could happen. If none of that applies then as previously mentioned check the relay itself, it may need a light tap to unstick the arm. Good luck. Electrical issues can be frustrating.

how about the flasher relay?

didn't see if you replaced that,

that (if bad) will give a solid light no flash for sure!

my apologies if you did this already but sometimes it can be the simple stuff,

Let us know and good luck!

PS: I've seen the wiper and turn signal "guts" you wouldn't think breaking them off and replacing the entire setup would cause this issue.

best guess is the flasher. (from what I'm reading)

Also, how about the emergency flashers do they work?

Cdavis03 - any luck with your issue? One of the greatest things about this site is it's full of many people who have been fixing issues for years. Many issues have been fixed with the help of others. This site is also great because when people finally fix an issue they follow up with the What's and How's. Any luck with your issue?
