|
|
Other than trying to cash in on the Manx name, I can't figure out what a "Manx Style" dune buggy is. I get:
1. Manx Dune Buggy. The real Deal.
2. Fiberglass bodied Dune Buggy. Made by a lot of companies.
3. Sand Rail.
4. Kit Cars. Bradley GT, Amante GT etc.
5. Replica cars. 550 Spyder, Bugatti etc.
I'm sure I missed some.
Mine's a Dune Buggy, looks a lot like a Manx, but don't most of them ?

Something like these BUT NOT manufactured by Bruce Meyers under the Meyers Manx name... Basically a "copy" or "clone" of Bruce's original (or later Manxter) designs...
http://www.dunebuggyarchives.com/
The site link above is full of "Manx" like clones to numerous to try and define...

I am not sure I really understand your question.
In my opinion you have the original Manx, then you have the copies which are very similar in design (ie: "Manx Style"). You then have dune buggies of different designs which are not similar to the original Manx. |

^^^ Ditto.
It started here, with Old Red, by Bruce Meyers.
Then deviations, or variations of the theme, occurred & resulted in people splashing molds off of the Manx and making slight tweaks to the design, yielding a 'Manx-style' product.

To me they are all just a Fiberglass Dunebuggy. Manx is just one brand of many. "Manx style" simply means it is similar to a real Manx but not an actual Manx brand.
There is a difference between a Dune Buggy and a Dunebuggy.
Personally the real Manx is not the best looking
They are all Kit Cars. Basically a Dunebuggy is a specific type of kit car and does not have doors. What most people refer to as kit Car is a style that does have doors. Kit cars were built on more then just VW chassis.
Replica is a copy of an original produced automobile, such as the AC Cobra or Porsche 356 Speedster. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

IMO..
"Manx Style" = Manxish
While most .. (not all) look like a Manx, Drive Like a Manx, Smell Like a Manx.... but are not a numbered and authorized Meyers Manx..
Like most things... its great to have the real deal... for the sake of saying you have the real deal... but just as much fun ( more fun IMO) to drive the pis outta the Manxish inbred brothers and sisters...

Almost everyone knows what a Myers Manx Buggy is, not all know a Spatz, Lobo, etc. Anything that is not an actual Q-Tip, Coke or Xerox, should be called a cotton swab, soda or photocopy. The Manx name has worked it's way into not just being the name of a specific product, but covering anything closely resembling an actual Manx. _________________ DMZFAB.COM |

I would say the one at the far right end is not a Manx style buggy. That is a T style buggy, a Berry Mini-T4 I'm pretty sure. _________________

Thanks for the replies. I guess my thoughts are that it's either a Manx or it isn't, a Sears or it isn't, an EMPI or it isn't. Rarely, if ever, do you see a "Sears" style or a "Spatz" style.
Me, I have a "Who knows what" style Dune Buggy. Calling it a Manx style isn't what it is, it would be like calling a Firebird a "Camaro" style musclecar and not saying it's a Firebird.
Thanks again for the replies / opinions. _________________ There's not a pill you can take. There's not a class you can go to. Stupid is fo-evah. Ron White |

Calling something a "style" after the original is not unheard of.
House can be "Cape Cod style" and not look identical. They can be "Victorian" style...and not be all alike.
Barbecue can be called "Carolina" style or "Memphis" style and not all be exactly the same.
If a buggy has the classic Manx configuration than to me calling it a Manx style is purely an identifier. Many buggies such as the T style buggies, the Deserter/Bounty Hunter, and Imp are not Manx style in my mind.
Your "who knows what" buggy is a "Who knows what" manufacturer buggy. It can still be described as a certain style given its characteristics. |

Outside the hobby, most don't even know what a "Manx" is! When asked about my project from someone not in the "know" like the members of this group, I usually start out with "it's like the old fiberglass buggies from the 60's". That usually gets the general idea across - a quick visual - because everyone remembers the "fiberglass buggies from the 60's"!
If there is interest to hear more, then I'll get into progressively more detailed information. This usually starts with describing how a guy in CA named Bruce Meyers started it all with a fiberglass buggy called a "Manx", and go from there. Most general conversations won't go much past this point, unless the guy (or gal) is a real car nut.
Still, it's always cool when someone sees the Deserter calendar hanging on my wall at work and comments about remembering the Dune Buggies from way back when.

I just tell people it's "Speedbuggy" and they get it right away.

Manx Style is a basic one piece tub that uses a shortened VW pan as the chassis and a removable hood.
The Manx was the first with this type of construction, so ones that follow this style are referred to as Manx Style. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class
