Anyhow I finally have a garage to work on "Rosie" as my daughter has named her.

Too funny, that was the name of my dad's 67 Fastback that I sold a couple of years ago... Cool

I know. I laughed as well because I contacted you about it back then as well. I'm just glad that I got the car out of the elements and in a heated garage.

I did a little investigative work on Rosie recently. I wanted to see what condition the front end was in since I know that there's a lot of rust issues to deal with. I removed the left fender and was happy to find that it looked and felt pretty solid. There was a lot of undercoating used so that may be a blessing or a curse, I won't know until I get to the shell stripping stage.

The lower part of the wheel well was as bad as I expected so I'll have my work cut out for me in the coming months / years. I'm also going to remove the fuel tank and drain whatever varnish (fuel) is in there. I snapped some pics. More as I go but I'm still settling into the new home and the only boxes that I know the contents for the most part are Type 3 parts. Razz

There is bound to be more rust under the rear fenders. You need a 1/4" drive 10mm to get that bolt out under the rear tail light. Don't forget/strip out the little phillips head screw under the hatch rubber at the top of the fender.

The undercoat on mine helped preserve the metal under there. It was nice shiney paint. The bear is getting it off, I prefer the $14 princess Auto needle scaler, it pops the hard undercoat off in no time. I'm sure the oscillating multi tools would work as well.
There is probably lots of rust on the seams under the back fenders where the seam sealer dries up and falls off.

^^ True.

Dad's Rosie was much better than we thought it would be once the undercoating was removed.

I actually like using a propane torch and a scraper. You just warm it up, and it peels off with the scraper. Then a little laquer thinner on a rag gets the left over residue off. You might be surprised how clean the metal is underneath the under coating. Wink

Going off the rust at the rear of the front fender (inner fender area), it looks like it had been holding a bunch of dirt and water (kept the dirt moist), which did form quite a bit of rust. The lower rust in the inner body corner is kind of normal, mainly due to rocks getting kicked up there and chipping the paint off. Add in that the body lips over the pan there creating a dirt trap, that only needs a little water to cause it to rust from the backside, and it'll be thru in no time.

The front bumper mounts are another common spot, due to the drain holes getting plugged (by either dirt or undercoating), and they then rust out from the inside.

That all doesn't really look as bad as I thought it was going to...

IMHO, you want to make notes of what is rusted away, and button that all back up.

You would be wise to get the tank boiled, re-plumb the fuel system, finish the motor build, brakes, suspension, etc. and drive it for a while.

The wife/family will be more enthused/understanding, and likely to support the project and not divorce you.
Plus, your stoke will be a lot stronger if you have it running/driving/registered/insured.
Just don't drive it in the rain like that, you will get wet! Laughing Laughing

(I forgot that part once, and was going to an important meeting in the old car. Whenever I'm trying to make a good first impression with a new client, the 'real car' goes through the automatic car wash along with a fill-up on the way there. I got soaked! There was NO way to hide from the spraying-down I got! I was diving in the back seat, jumping around trying to get out of the way of the water... Made me late when I had to go home and change clothes... Rolling Eyes )

So, there is _plenty_ to do with mechanicals to keep you busy.
By all means, jump on any treasures you find, but trust me. it will take a _long_ time to get all of the patch pieces you will need.

You are definitely best off jumping in for a full-body blasting with every part you *think* you will need sitting there ready to go.

That sunroof, man, I'm not gonna lie, that's going to take some doin' right there.....

FWIW I am pretty sure those are Volvo belts from the 60's. One is obviously incomplete. I bet they latch to the VW center ring though.

I was kind of thinking the same thing though. I've seen worse on new vehicles too (remember, I live in the "salt belt"). But it also looks like a lot of standard type 3 rust spots. Yes, some are more exagerated due to the sunroof, but still type 3 do rust in the spots he's showing.
And yes, I do agree, fixing the sunroof related rust will be a challenge.

I knew that sunroof issue was going to be bad when I saw the car but I will eventually get that fixed. It's going to be like dropping water on the fuzzy pre-gremlins.

The plan is still the same. I'm going to rebuild the engine over the winter/ spring and then look into the braking, suspension, transmission. I figure that will keep me busy for a while. I may pick at some small interior parts over the winter like the door card upholstery.

I did put the fender back on but I wanted to pull the tank and have it cleaned, possibly blasted and powder coated black. I also wanted the tank out so that I could periodically spray penetrating fluid on the brake line fittings on the master cylinder and steering assembly. These small things will keep me motivated.

I haven't had much time to work on my T3 over the winter months with holidays and kids being sick on and off since September and the missus going back to work after maternity leave it's been hectic. Several days of -28C hasn't helped either and a large Minivan has been hogging my garage LOL!

Anyhow I have two questions. The first is regarding door card vinyl and removing the old glue. What do you guys use to remove it?

Second question is regarding my side view mirrors on the car. I haven't seen anything like them on T3s especially the driver side door.

I'm hoping to pick away at small things until I'm ready to get the engine re-assembled starting this Spring. I'm going to get the car running and drive it before I tear into it even if it's into town once in a while on weekends. Once I tear in it will be years before I get to drive it again so I might as well enjoy it as some of you have suggested.

Fingernail polisher remover will remove the glue. These are original '67 squareback mirrors. Your mirrors came on Ford/Mercury I believe? Wink

Not much to report but I started doing a few little things. We had the Swagger wagon aka looser cruiser parked in the garage during this crappy winter with -25C weather. If you look closely you can see my T3 hiding under a car cover in the background.

I sent my cylinders and pistons out to get measured at the local machine shop. The pistons are fine and the cylinders can be honed. The builder said that I could use rings that are 1mm oversize.

I'd like to keep the engine OG at least to get it running for the summer before building something aftermarket but I'm not sure if this is cutting corners. In other engines it's not uncommon to use oversize rings but I need your expertise here.

We had nice day so I pulled the car out (who by the way has been re-named "Suzie" by my daughter) of the garage so I could sweep it out.

I also removed the passenger side mirror. It's definitely a Ford item as the part number on the inside of the mounting. I removed it and now I have two screw holes but I'd rather have that than a Ford mirror on my car, and two more holes to the collection won't hurt Laughing

I fiddled around a bit today and removed the pop out latches for a clean and polish. I also cleaned all the windows with a Norex cloth as she was raving on about how awesome it worked on our shower glass so I gave it a shot. I hadn't cleaned the windows since I bought the car so it was the first time since 1976 that anyone has touched them and man I was impressed with end result. All I used was a damp Norwex cloth and a dry polishing cloth.

Mike what the hell is wrong with you. I hope you were joking about the mirrors on his car now Rolling Eyes Laughing

Edit - I see the pas is different and does look American.

Drivers side is from a T2 Bay Window bus. VW family - not the right mirror for sure.

As far as the glue on the panels - if you cant carefully pull them off the fiber board then maybe ad some heat from the Mrs's hair drier. Gently heat and pull away.

What are the plans for the Eberspacher gas heater? I only skimmed through this post so forgive me if it was mentioned.

Id love to see this car restored in its stock set up. 66-67 T3 fastbacks were my first Cool

I'll eventually get the gas heater working even though the car will never see sa cold day. I'd like everything on the car to function as it did when it was new.

As for the mirrors I'll replace the T2 mirror with a proper one either a genuine piece or a reproduction.

Keepng the dream alive...

Just takes a bit;
Take it out, maybe wipe or wash,
Stare,
Dream...

And,
Maybe,
If she's not watching,
Buy a part or two.

Setting reasonable, attainable goals helps ensure success!
