I searched and didn't see this discussed at all so just thought I would ask.

I was just looking at some Vanagon listings on Criagslist and I frequently see people call them "Westphalia" instead of "Westfalia" out of some sort of misguided "snooty correctness." Question

What am I missing here? Question

"Westphalia" is clearly a region while "Westfalia" is the company that converts VW vans. Which if you read the companies history it seems it has always been "Westfalia".

Does the confusion come from some "origin sticker" or similar marking that designates the region where they were built?

It's just a typo just like some people might type Criagslist instead of Craigslist or say companies instead of company's.

That does not seam to be the case. It's clearly deliberate.

You also don't mistype "ph" instead of "f" Wink Its a misuse of the word not a typing error.

To steal a thread, I've noticed many in the far north, especially Canada, pronounce vanagon, 'vana-gone', whereas in my burg they pronounce it 'vana-gun'.

Then there's Vanna White but that's another .....

Sometimes PH in English equals F in Spanish

Pharmacy = Farmacia
Physics = Física

and so on...

From the interwebs, all of the words that I mentioned are Greek in origin, and they all contained the Greek letter φ (phi). In Classical Greek this was pronounced as an aspirated [pʰ], which the Latins wrote as ph when they borrowed the words from Greek. Later this sound changed into an [f] in both Greek and Latin, and was passed as such into French, and then into English.

Once the idea that ph was pronounced [f] was established, it spread to a few other areas, as well. Borrowings from Hebrew and other Semitic languages sometimes use ph, especially since the Hebrew letter פ can be [p] or [f] depending on context. Vietnamese regularly uses ph for [f], in this case because the modern Vietnamese orthography was designed by the French.

defiantly!

Sometimes I also feel defiant when using correct spelling. I don't really care how people spell Westphalica or why they spell it that way.

I absolutely love the irony of that post.

The first might be a typo, but the "companies instead of company's" example you cite represents my own personal campaign on the misuse of the apostrophe. Don't even get me started...

Now, back to the West(f\ph)alia discussion.

there is a big sticker, front and rear, spelled Westfalia.
so when pertaining to the van, Westphalia would be incorrect.

Porsche sounds faster, but if I called my van an '85 Vanagon Porsche it would be incorrect.
