I gave it a full tune up for the first time in my short ownership. I adjusted the valves (all were too tight), checked and gapped plugs (looked god, but gap was too small on all), checked the point gap and dwell (finally something set up correctly) and adjusted the timing on the 009 to get 28 degrees advance at 3500 rpm. It was only getting about 22, so I am hoping this well help reduce the severe bog when doing anything but mashing the throttle. Unfortunately, I ran out of daylight and had other stuff to do today, so I didn't get to do a test drive. Muir's book was a good guide for all of this, and it was pretty easy. I haven't used a dwell tach and timing light since I sold my '63 Impala SS a very long time ago. |

tacked together my new floor pan and bent a piece for my rear support to give me my 1" body lift. _________________ skill comes by the constant repetition of familiar feats, not by one over bold attempt at a feat for which the doer is yet poorly prepared |

I have been rescuing some buggy's of late.
Rescued the Franken Manx:
Stumbled across a few buggy's that were just pulled from the weeds.
So, loaded up two of them.
Now I have something to do this Winter.
1 - Meyers Tow'd
1 - Franken Manx to re-build
1 - Viper to put back together
1 - Original Berry Mini T
1 - X-Body

Looks like it was painted with a live chicken, polished with a brick and buffed with a pine cone |

Something a little different. Since I have soooooo much Fiberglass to repair, I am going to do one thread on just the body repairing. It will show my methods, (most of which came from Vince, surfnc, teaching me) on minor to major fiberglass work. Hopefully this may help some people on the fence about working on their projects and be less intimidated by the task.
I will also do just one thread on building chassis. Cover a simple pan shortening, and building a cheap, but strong tubular chassis for those with rusted out pan heads and tunnels rotted away.
The Berry Mini T will get a build thread. The Franken Manx will get continued on the thread Marc started about it. The Viper and X-Body may get a thread, but most likely will be split between the other threads as test subjects. The Tow'd will get its own thread due to the extreme nature of the build it will get done to it.
I do not hope to do all these in the next 4 month's, but make serious progress on them and finish up through the next 12 month's. I am thinking these will help pass my Winter by quicker. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

That is a bunch of work you have lined up. Nice that someone like you will save these buggies and restore them. Good work. Thanks for documenting your progress. It means a lot to us.
My buggies are under tarps and waiting for a sunny day.

Replaced the leaking push rod tubes in her Tow'd, went with SCAT "high temp" blue ones. We'll test them out at El Mirage this weekend. |

Mike
I used the same blue Scat pushrod tubes on my Baja project and have not fired the engine up at this time. Curious on how well they seal. |

And, I had a Sand Shark make it's way into the truck bed today. The trailer was full of another VW project. So, add another to the list of buggy projects.

I finally started working on my Safari. Pulled the body from the bent chassis. Began working on a new chassis. Will start on bodywork this winter. _________________ Bryan

Picked up a couple seats for one of the next buggy projects. Not a whole lot of colors to choose from for the body color that will go with red seats, but I have one picked out in my head.
Very narrow mounting inserts which make them excellent to mount in a buggy. And, my rear fits them comfortably.

Very Nice! That's exactly the style seat I was looking for.
Where did you get them? _________________ 1967 Type 1 Sunroof

I got them from a buddy, who pulled them out of a beetle. They were setting on a sheet of plywood in the rear of a beetle. Were not even bolted down. The front of the Beetle had two more identical for the front seats. He said they sucked for getting into/out of because of the "bucket" effect and trying to come out sideways. But for a buggy that does not have doors, and sit directly down into, they will be fine.
One has a tag on the underside that states they are "Cobra". They look like they would fit the seat tracks of a 914 Porsche set up, like a 914 seat up grade. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class
