155/60 series tires are a low profile tire, they wouldn't look right with a stock suspension. If you want to go with a 155, stick with a 155/80. It will have a similar look to the original 5.60/15 tires your '68 came with.

Can anyone tell me if the 155/60's fit in the bugs spare tire well? Will be mounted on a 4.5" BRM.
Thanks.

So basically, the place to get these is Tirerack.com?
I've talked to a ton of tire places in my area and all of them look at my like I made that size up in my head or something.
I'd really like to find some local to avoid shipping but it is what it is. If anyone has any news on this stuff clue me in. Thanks |
That's where I got mine.

Any chance of a closer picture to see how the tire sits on the rim?
Are they slightly stretched on a 5.5"?
Or anyone else have a picture that shows how they sit..? _________________ oUr rOaDTrIp adVeNTuReS

The width of a 155 is basically the width of a stock bias ply VW tire that normally came on a 4.5" rim. More than likely on a 5" repop BRM, they would look normal, on a 5.5" wheel the rim would noticeably stick out. If you are looking for more tread in the front but would prefer a lower profile tire, check out the 165/45 Nankang that CIP sells. That would fit a 5.5" rim nicely.

I want to try Nankang's NS2R 165/50r15 on my next build. They're a perfect fit on 5.5" wheels.
I orginally bought them to go on my Festiva for track use (it's a dot approved track tire) but ended up leaving them on for summer street use. The grip is incredible for a tire in it's price range; I actually reset a track record with these back in February. One of the biggest issues I had with my '64 Bug was the 145 Firestones locked up too easy under braking, or understeered badly when cornering. The Nankangs will solve that problem while still being skinny enough to avoid hydroplaning. I had 195/50's on the front of my '64 for awhile but the extra width made them hydroplane easier.
They also hold up very well for a soft compound tire; I put about 8,000 hard miles and a couple autocrosses (~20 laps) on them on my Festiva with -3.5 camber. The 120 treadwear version is a "sprint race" compound that doesn't need heat to grip their best; perfect for street or autocross. They do well in the rain; I've driven at 80 mph on the interstate in the rain in my Festiva on these with no hint of hydroplaning.

You have to be really low to pulls these off, even then a taller tire would be better looking, they look a little too square on a bug.
